I can't think of anything more dumb and more delusional Fawad Chaudry has ever done until today when he told us that 38% custom duty will be slapped on overseas Pakistanis bringing in more than one phone. Let's break this down a bit from a different point of view.
1. Sometimes people carry extra phone for their work.
2. That extra phone might be a gift for their mother, daughter, sister or other loved ones in Pakistan. How can you be morally so fucked up to tax someone's personal gift.
3. Even if OPs bring few phone to sale in local market, and they might make few thousands on each. What is big fucking deal? You have billions rupees real estate still untaxed or taxed at a very minimum rate. We never hear any crackdown over that.
4. Unlike import, No foreign exchange ever leaves Pakistan when OPs bring phone as they purchase them overseas with money from that country.
5. Quality product becomes available in Pakistan to fulfill the demand without being burden on our foreign exchange reserves. So This is not importing at all and shouldn't be treated as import. This is personal baggage and gifts.
6. When OPs visit Pakistan they spend tons of money here and their visit already help our tax collection and local economy. Benefit that we get from their visit is much more than few thousands we might collect from slapping inhumane custom duties.
7. Imran Khan always talk about promoting tourism. How the fuck will you promote and encourage someone to visit Pakistan when they have to deal with crap like this. We need to incentivize OPs more so they visit more often and bring those dollars, Euros, Pounds and Rials to spend in our local economy.
8. Phones are like toys, if you drop them they break and needs to be repurchased again. Such harsh taxation is unjustifiable to begin with.
Lastly, if you are really worried about tax collections, perhaps you need to grow some balls and start crack-down on real estate. Rich people invest in plots, make 30% profit in year and never pay a fucking dime. Real Estate prices are so high that even modern city like Istanbul has cheaper prices compared to Pakistan, because all the black and non-taxed money is parked in plots in housing societies.
Overseas Pakistanis are pride and backbone of this country's economy. From creation of National Anthem of this country all the way to Bhasha Dam, these OPs have been a blessing for our nation. Wake the fuck up and start incentivizing them instead of penalizing them like criminals every-time they come to visit Pakistan.
