Pentagon's Hypersonic Plane Goes Missing. A test flight of the Falcon HTV-2, a hypersonic plane capable of reaching speeds roughly 20 times the speed of sound, ended unexpectedly early on Thursday when ground controllers lost contact with the arrowhead-shaped plane less than half an hour after it took to the skies. Launched at 7:45 a.m. Pacific Time from the Vandenberg Air Force Base, northwest of Santa Barbara, the aircraft soared to the upper reaches of the atmosphere aboard an eight-story Minotaur IV rocket, before being unleashed from its protective cover atop the rocket.[/QUOTE]

Thursday at 16:45 European time, tests the U.S. military is the world's fastest airplane. The aircraft is unmanned and is called the Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 (HTV-2). The aircraft's potential top speed is 20 times the speed of sound and will potentially be able to move from London to Sydney in under an hour. HTV-2 will be launched to the boundary of the Earth atmosphere on a rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Where will the aircraft be connected by the rocket and on the way down to the ground will come up in top speed. It was first tested in April this year, but then have the flight canceled because of technical problems. The testing was actually done Wednesday, but it was postponed to Thursday because of bad weather.
