[h=1]Maoists kill one soldier every three days: Naxal corridor is three times deadlier than terror-hit states[/h]
A deadly trend has struck roots in India's Red Corridor over the past three years. A soldier fighting Maoists deep inside the jungles of central and south-central India is far more likely to be killed than his uniformed brothers taking on militants in Jammu and Kashmir, or insurgents in the North-east.
Rebels in the Red zone are killing more soldiers than are dying in all insurgency-hit areas put together.
Official data from the Union home ministry shows that at least one security personnel loses his life to Maoists every three days. The chance of the enemy surprising security forces makes the job of their personnel highly risky.

"Numbers can never tell the real horror tales. There is death at every step," says an official who has served in these high-risk zones.
Maoists are acknowledged experts in planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and are always devising new strategies to ensure mass killings. And they seem to be getting better. There have been recent incidents when several security personnel have been butchered in one ambush.

Sources say IED explosions have been responsible for most deaths.

"They plan attacks and ambush our forces resulting in large killings," the officer said.

Scary numbers

The numbers tell the tale. The death toll of security personnel killed between 2011 and 2013 was 371 in the Maoist zone; the number of incidents of violence in the Red zone was 4,311.

High intensity conflict zones like Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Meghalaya seem safer than the Maoist bastions of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh or Orissa, where most the security personnel killings have taken place.

The total death toll in all insurgency-affected areas was 239 in the same period and the number of incidents of violence 3,123.

"Terrorism is a product of enemy countries. But that's not the case with Maoists. They are receiving support from many quarters within the country The government is restrained against them," said Ajai Raj Sharma, former Director-General of the Border Security Force.

More than 50 others were injured in the explosion on the busy Ferozepur Road close to a vegetable market in the south of the city.
The Pakistani Taliban said it was behind the explosion.
Reports suggest it was a suicide bomber on a motorbike, and the target may have been police working in the area. Police officers are among the dead.
Windows were blown out in nearby buildings by the force of the blast.
Eyewitness Sher Dil, who works at an office near the site, said he heard a "deafening blast".
The market was full of police at the time because officers had been sent to clear stalls that had illegally spilled into the road.

"We suspect that he [the suicide bomber] came on a motorcycle and he rammed it into a police checkpoint," Lahore police operations chief Haider Ashraf told Reuters.
Rescue workers have transferred the wounded to hospital, and police and army troops were sent to contain the scene.
Pakistan's president, prime minister and army chief have all expressed their sorrow and condolences for the loss of life.
It is the latest in a series of explosions in Lahore in recent months.
In April, the Pakistani Taliban said they had carried out an attack on workers conducting a government census.
A Taliban faction said it was behind a bomb attack in Lahore in February which killed 13 people and wounded more than 80.
The Pakistani Taliban is loosely allied with Afghanistan's Taliban insurgents, but targets the Pakistani government.

India : Sell your wife if you can't build toilet for her, Bihar DM tells villagers

23bihar.jpg

Raking up a controversy, Aurangabad District Magistrate Kanwal Tanuj has said that those who cannot build a toilet for their wives, should sell them.

He was addressing a public gathering on Saturday on a cleanliness drive in Jamhore village of Bihar's Aurangabad district.

"Due to lack of toilets, women get raped and harassed. It only costs Rs. 12,000 for the construction of the toilet. Is 12,000 more than anyone's wife's dignity? Who can let her wife get raped in return of Rs. 12000?"

Tanuj said.
"If this is your mentality then go and sell your wife. Those who cannot build toilet should sell or auction his wife," he added

December 21, 2015 |
The youngest of six men convicted of the gruesome gang rape and murder of a woman on a New Delhi bus in 2012 was released on Sunday after serving just three years in a correctional center. The 20-year-old's discharge was greeted by protests and an attempt to extend his punishment.
On Monday, after considering a petition from the Delhi Commission for Women demanding a longer sentence for the man, who remains unnamed because he was 17 at the time of the rape and tried as a minor, India's Supreme Court said that it had no power to detain him. The Juvenile Justice Board had given him the maximum punishment of three years in a reform facility, which he has served.
"Everything had happened in accordance with the law," the two judges said in their ruling, adding that they "need legislative sanctions" to take any further action against him.
On Sunday, more than a hundred people, including the victim's parents, gathered in Delhi to protest against the convict's release. Compounding their frustration, the young man is due to receive a new identity, and his public record will not include reference to the crime.
The rape and murder in 2012 shocked India, highlighting a culture of abuse and harassment against women in the country, where police say a rape is reported every 20 minutes.
Related: Women Feel Unsafe as Threat of Sexual Violence Pervades Everyday Life in India
In 2012, the juvenile and five adult companions lured a 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist and her male friend onto a private bus in Delhi. The man who was just released was the bus driver's conductor, and had originally called out to the pair encouraging them to board the bus. He and the others repeatedly and viciously raped the woman and beat both her and her friend with an iron rod before dumping them on a road. The assailants also penetrated her with the rod, damaging her internal organs.
The woman died two weeks later of her injuries. Four of the adults were sentenced to death while the fifth hanged himself in prison. The death sentences have not yet been carried out.
The lenient sentence for the teenager sparked debate over whether the country is too soft on young offenders. Police accused him of being violent and said he pulled out part of the woman's intestines with his hands during the attack.
India responded to the public outcry over the rape by fast-tracking tougher laws against sex crimes, and members of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government have pushed to change the juvenile law and reduce the age of attaining adulthood from 18 to 16.
Swati Maliwal, the head of Delhi Commission for Women, told reporters outside the court that the national government let India down by failing to change the law under which anyone below the age of 18 can only be sentenced to three years.
"In the end, the court said we share your concerns," she said. "But the law is weak, we can't do anything."
Related: How India Is Fixing Its Rape Culture — and Why There's Still a Long Way Left to Go
There have been moderate legislative gains in protecting women in the Indian judicial system since the Delhi bus attack. The government expanded the legal definition of rape and increased sentences for convictions, but also refused to criminalize martial rape, citing India's cultural heritage. Despite the stronger laws, women in India are still at great risk for violence.
"I'm inclined to say there's much more openness and reporting in certain sectors, and perhaps some less stigma, but what hasn't changed is the social consequences, the violence which is burdened on women not the men," Priya Nanda, the New Delhi-based director of Social and Economic Development at the International Center for Research on Women, told VICE News in June.

India Bihar rapes 'caused by lack of toilets'

Image captionMore than half-a-billion Indians lack access to basic sanitationMost of the cases of rape of women and girls in India's Bihar state occur when they go out to defecate in the open, police and social activists say.
Some 85% of the rural households in the state, one of India's poorest, have no access to a toilet, a study says.
The police reported more than 870 cases of rape in Bihar last year.
More than half-a-billion Indians lack access to basic sanitation. Many do not have access to flush toilets or other latrines.
The issue of sexual violence against women and girls in India has been under intense scrutiny since the gang rape and murder of a student on a Delhi bus in December led to widespread protests.
In March, India passed a new bill containing harsher punishments, including the death penalty, for rapists.
'Worrisome trend'

There have been a number of recent cases where women and girls have been raped in Bihar after they stepped out of their homes to defecate:

  • On 5 May, an 11-year-old girl was raped in Mai village in Jehanabad district when she was going to the field at night

  • On 28 April, a young girl was abducted and raped when she had gone out to defecate in an open field in Kalapur village in Naubatpur, 35km (21 miles) from the state capital, Patna

  • On 24 April, another girl was raped in similar circumstances on a farm in Chaunniya village in Sheikhpura district. She told the police that two villagers had followed and raped her. One of them has been arrested.
Senior police official Arvind Pandey told the BBC that such cases happen every month in Bihar.
"They take place when women step out to defecate early in the morning and late evening. It is a very worrisome trend."
