India announced Saturday that its first indigenously-built nuclear submarine
is ready for sea trials, a step before it becomes fully operational, and called it a "giant stride" for the nation.

India unveiled the 6,000-ton INS Arihant -- Destroyer of Enemies -- in 2009 as part of a project to built five such vessels which would be armed with nuclear-tipped missiles and torpedoes.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he was "delighted to learn that the nuclear propulsion reactor on board INS Arihant, India's first indigenous nuclear powered submarine, has now achieved criticality".
Criticality refers to the point at which a nuclear reaction is self-sustaining.

Singh described the development as "a giant stride in the progress of our indigenous technological capabilities" and said he hoped to see the submarine commissioned soon.

Arihant is powered by an 85-megawatt nuclear reactor and can reach 44 kilometres an hour (24 knots), according to defence officials. It will carry a 95-member crew.

India earlier activated the atomic reactor on-board the INS Arihant, paving the way it to begin sea trials. The Indian navy inducted a Russian-leased nuclear submarine into service in April 2012, joining China, France, the United States, Britain and Russia in the elite club of countries with nuclear-powered vessels.

Nuclear submarines can function underwater without needing to surface regularly to be recharged, unlike their conventional diesel-electric counterparts.

India is due to receive the first of six Franco-Spanish diesel-electric Scorpene submarines in 2015, part of a multi-billion dollar project to modernise its navy. The submarine announcement came just two days before India was due to launch its first indigenous aircraft carrier "INS Vikrant".

The navy will launch its first indigenous aircraft carrier Monday at Kochi, making India only the fifth country in the world with the capability to build such vessels.

The 40,000-tonne aircraft carrier sets a new global standard in terms of size and complexity, the defence ministry says. After final fitting of equipment and extensive trials, the aircraft carrier is due to join the navy by 2018.

It will ply the seas alongside the former Russian aircraft carrier "Admiral Gorshkov", now the "INS Vikramaditya", due to be delivered by year-end after a delay of more than four years. India has been Russia's top arms customer for years, but relations have frayed over delays and cost-overruns. India is spending tens of billions of dollars upgrading its mainly Soviet-era military hardware.

We have Agusta 90, so no need to worry I think we since we have Nuclear capability we don't need to spend so much on defence, saying that we should try to curb internal threats as India can't do anything they know it very well otherwise they could have done it during Kargil skirmish.

Someone tell me when a Nuclear Sub actually proved useful or tilted the balace in any conflict anywhere ever

Apart from Hollywood Movies, they are an expensive indulgence. What exactly is India defending ?

Pakistan going to Attack India from the Sea when we have a 1500 mile Land border which is easier territory You can walk across it.

Or IS China going to sail their Single Aircraft Carrier 6000 miles to attack India by Sea

Apart from that what exactly is the need ?

They call everything "Indigenous" even this submarine is on lease from Russia and this particular one was dumped by Russian years ago. Baniya thinks they will fulfill their dream of "Akhand Bharat" by rented weapons.

nuclear might be very good because they are nuclear charged but they have very big disadvantage...they produce too much noise that can be heard by destroyers from far..In order to tackle aircraft carriers of USA,China reduced the use of nuclear submarines because of the same reason..diesel submarines are much more quite then nuclear,if Indians can think by acquiring nuke subs they have advantage of staying underwater for more time..huh it is its disadvantage at the same time..on the other hand paks diesel subs can carry nuke missiles that can be used for air, land or underwater strikes..and above all PC3 orions are subs early warning planes..so no worry people.. India will always remain GAY HIND [hilar][hilar][hilar] :chilli::chilli::chilli:

The best reply Pak can give is complete silence. We have plenty of nuclear firepower of many sorts should they wish to take us on. It's just to show their own people more the anything else. They just want to blame us for IOK being on fire. Pak generally does not speak much of what it has or the deals done with China. Not knowing what we have is much more dangerous for the enemy.

India Activates Atomic Reactor On First Nuclear Submarine,

India Activates Atomic Reactor On First Nuclear Submarine, Navy To Deploy Arihant In Two Years

NEW DELHI -- India on Saturday activated the atomic reactor onboard its first indigenously designed and built nuclear submarine, paving the way for its deployment by the navy in the next two years.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the development represented a giant stride in the progress of India's indigenous technological capabilities.

The vessel is the first ballistic missile submarine to be built outside the five recognized nuclear powers – the United States, France, Russia, Britain and China.

Rahul Bedi, an analyst for the independent Jane's Information Group, said the submarine would now undergo sea trials. The vessel has been undergoing harbor trials in eastern India.

Last year, India acquired a Russian Nerpa nuclear submarine for its navy on a 10-year lease from Russia at a total cost of nearly $1 billion.

Re: India Activates Atomic Reactor On First Nuclear Submarine,

Nuclear submarine is the best and safest nuclear deterrent, because no body knows where they are at any point it is the best second strike weapon.

@Khansaber @moderators

It is a shame to show the photos of people distress in a natural calamity like floods to ridicule a nation on some technological achievement.
This shows that hatred cultivated in the minds does not go even if there is a change in living environment.
