ISLAMABAD: A desperate Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif specially sent his official plane to Karachi just to fetch the Watan Cards so that the process of disbursement of compensation to the flood victims through their distribution might be kicked off at all costs on Thursday.
The chief minister thus frustrated the plot hatched by some at the federal level to delay on one pretext or the other the delivery of Watan cards, each having a value of Rs20,000, to the Punjab government, which was anxious to launch the scheme even before Eid-ul-Fitr, a senior official told The News.
He said that the repeated intervention of Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Shahbaz Sharifs insistence made it possible for the Punjab government to begin the process on Thursday, which resulted in the distribution of 300 Watan cards among the heads of the flood destroyed families.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Chief Nawaz Sharif gave away the first card in Mianwali on Thursday.
After knowing precisely the man behind this plot, Shahbaz Sharif declared at the card distribution ceremony in Mianwali if Interior Minister Rehman Malik repeated this conspiracy, he would be thrown in the floodwater, the official quoted the chief minister as saying in anger.
As the story goes, on Wednesday night the Punjab government lined up all the arrangements to hold the inaugural ceremony in Mianwali, the first of its kind since the decision to provide Rs20,000 compensation to the every flood hit family head was taken, on Thursday. The National Database & Registration Authority (Nadra) told the provincial administration that it had not yet received the Watan cards from Dubai (where these were prepared), which, however, were ready, and that it was not possible for it to get and deliver them to the Punjab government on Thursday.
On knowing this, the chief minister asked us to tell the federal government that he was ready to send his official plane to Dubai to bring the cards, the official said. Then, the stance was changed by the Nadra, which stated that the cards were lying in Karachi, and could not be brought to Mianwali on Thursday. Then, we lodged a serious complaint with the prime minister, which gave a shut-up call to the Nadra.
The official said that the whole plan was not to let the Punjab government meet its promise with the flood-hit people to bring something good before Eid.
He said after getting a message from the Nadra that it was in no position to make the cards available to the Punjab government in Mianwali on Thursday, the chief minister sent his plane to Karachi to get the cards. The jet left Lahore for Karachi by Sehri time and flew to Mianwala by 9:30 am enabling the Punjab government to go ahead with its programme of providing the compensation money to the flood victims.
