LAHORE: The federal governments claim about ensuring electricity supply during Sehri and Iftar hours proved false as people faced immense problems on the first day of Ramazan due to power loadshedding in the provincial metropolis.

Electricity outages during Taraweeh, Sehri and Iftari hours were witnessed in various parts of the city despite claims from Pepco about uninterrupted power supply. Most affected areas included Allama Iqbal Town, Samanabad, Ichhra, Mozang, Yateemkhana, Shadbagh, Garden Town and localities along Multan Road.

People said that in many areas, the power supply remained suspended right after Sehri and people had to offer the Fajr prayer in darkness. They said that there was no schedule of power cuts. FULL NEWS LINK

Karachi

The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) failed to live up to its commitment to reduce loadshedding in Ramazan as people suffered up to 10 hours of power outages on Tuesday.

This was despite the announcements made by the gas utility and the state-run oil company that they had fulfilled their part of the commitment by providing additional fuel to the KESC for reductions in the duration of power outages during Ramazan.

Against the backdrop of the worsening power supply situation, the representatives of associations of the five industrial estates of the city and those of industrial zones in the surroundings of Karachi also issued a warning on Tuesday that they would stop paying electricity bills if the industrial units of were further subjected to prolonged power cuts. Pakistan’s energy requirements are increasing day by day and not only economic growth but also political stability is linked with energy resources. A possible energy solution, based on wind and solar energy, can be used. Pakistan has ideal situations for both wind and solar power generation. Around 73 percent of Spain’s power needs are met by wind and solar energy. Pakistan, in order to solve this energy issue, should cooperate with different countries like Iran, Kuwait, France, Germany, Russia and China — countries that are focusing time, research and resources to find suitable methods of power generation.

China is our time-tested and reliable friend. For this purpose, in May 2011, many high officials and big business groups from China visited Pakistan and discussions regarding different projects in the fields of energy, infrastructure and railways in Pakistan were held. Many Chinese companies have already offered their support for different energy projects. China has also planned to invest in a 300 MW solar power project in Pakistan.
