Pope Benedict XVI has called on Pakistan to repeal its blasphemy laws, which can carry a death sentence for insulting the Prophet Muhammad.
He said the laws served as a pretext for acts of injustice and violence against religious minorities.
The Pope referred to Pakistani governor Salman Taseer, whose assassination last week was blamed on his support for changes to the blasphemy laws.
A bodyguard of Mr Taseer has confessed in court to his killing.
Malik Mumtaz Hussein Qadri told the Anti-Terrorism Court in Rawalpindi that he had acted alone in the attack.
The Pope made his remarks in a new year address to diplomats accredited to the Vatican.
"I once more encourage the leaders of that country [Pakistan] to take the necessary steps to abrogate that law," he said.
"The tragic murder of the governor of Punjab shows the urgent need to make progress in this direction," he added.
The Pope also condemned anti-Christian attacks in Egypt and Iraq, saying they showed "the urgent need for governments of the region to adopt... effective measures for the protection of religious minorities".
The BBC's David Willey in Rome says it was one of the Pope's most robust defences yet of religious freedom.
Pakistan's blasphemy law returned to the spotlight in November when Christian woman Asia Bibi was sentenced to death for allegedly insulting the Prophet Muhammad. She denies the charge.

Mr Taseer angered hardline clerics by visiting her in jail and by supporting proposed reforms to the legislation.
After last Tuesday's assassination in Islamabad, Qadri said he had been angered by Mr Taseer's stance over the blasphemy laws.
On Monday, Qadri's brother told the BBC that his family had nothing to do with the murder.
"He never told us what he planned to do," Dilpazeer Awan said.
"It was his personal act, so I cannot comment on whether he did right or wrong."
Qadri was whisked into court on Monday morning - a day earlier than scheduled - to prevent his supporters showing up, correspondents say.
He said in a written statement that he had acted alone.
At his first court appearance in Islamabad last week, Qadri was showered with rose petals by sympathisers, including a number of lawyers.

کیا پوپ صاحب کو گوانتاناموبے جیل کا علم ہے جس کے لئے خود امریکی وزیر خارجہ ہلیری کلنٹن نے کہا کہ یہ امریکہ کی پیشانی پر کلنک کا ٹیکہ ہے۔ اب مجسمہ آزادی کی بجائے امریکہ کا قومی نشان گوانتاناموبے جیل ہونا چاہئے۔ صدر اوباما نے اپنی انتخابی تقریروں میں گوانتاناموبے جیل کو بند کرنے کا اعلان کیا تھا۔ مگر صدر بننے کے بعد ابھی یہ شرمناک جیل موجود ہے۔ کیا وہاں ایک قیدی کے طور پر صدر اوباما جانا چاہتے ہیں۔ اس کے علاوہ مسلمانوں کے علاقے میں بگرام جیل ہے جس میں صرف مسلمان قیدی ہیں۔ ڈاکٹر عافیہ کو بھی یہاں رکھا گیا ہے۔ کیا ان جیلوں میں ذلیل و خوار ہونے والے مسلمان قیدیوں کے لئے کوئی بات کی گئی۔ توہین رسالت کے حوالے سے گورنر پنجاب سلمان تاثیر کے قتل کا ذمہ دار کیری جونز ہے جس کے ایک منصفانہ اور احمقانہ بیان کے بعد سلمان تاثیر نے احتیاط سے کام نہ لیا اور عدالتی فیصلے کے باوجود شیخوپورہ جیل چلے گئے۔ پہلے معاملے کو مس ہینڈل کیا گیا۔ یہ ایک جذباتی معاملہ ہے۔ مجھے سلمان تاثیر کے قتل کا دکھ ہے۔ توہینِ رسالت ہماری عقیدت اور عقیدے کا مسئلہ ہے۔ ورنہ پہاڑ پر یا دریا میں تھوکنے والے کے پاس سوائے شرمندگی کے کچھ نہیں ہوتا۔ اب اس موقع پر پوپ کی طرف سے یہ بیان ایک غیر مذہبی واردات ہے۔ وہ لوگ پاکستان کو کمزور کرکے اپنے مذموم عزائم کی تکمیل چاہتے ہیں۔ یہ کبھی نہیں ہو گا۔ ہم لوگ خود عشق رسول کو متنازعہ بنانے میں لگے ہوئے ہیں۔ اس پر ایک الگ کالم لکھ رہا تھا کہ اس دوران پوپ کا ایک متنازعہ بیان سامنے آ گیا۔ قانون کے غلط استعمال کو روکنے کے کئی طریقے ہیں۔

Pope Benedicts Inappropriate Remarks On Pakistan

The problem in Pakistan is not between Muslims and Christians. It is between two Muslim minorities: liberal extremists and religious extremists. Foreign interference exacerbates this tension and does not help.

ISLAMABAD, PakistanEgypt is a moderate Muslim country, even liberal, with zero tolerance for religious extremism. But this week Cairo recalled its ambassador to the Vatican after Pope Benedict XVI called on world leaders to protect Egyptian Coptic Christians after an unprecedented bombing at an Alexandria church on New Years Eve.
This was a clear call from the Pope for the world to interfere in Egypt. For years Washingtons second largest recipient of annual US aid, you would think Cairo would be mellow to the call. No way.
Egypt rejected Popes call. In a formal statement released by the Egyptian foreign office, a spokesman said, Egypt will not allow any non-Egyptian faction to interfere in its internal affairs under any pretext, the statement said. The Coptic question is specifically an internal Egyptian affair.
Cairos real concern was that Popes statement, coming three weeks after the incident, would revive tensions in Egypt after they had calmed down.
Contrast the Egyptian response with Pakistans.
In the same speech, the Pope called on Pakistan to repeal its anti-blasphemy law.
At first look, there is no reason to doubt the good intention of Pope Benedict.
He said repealing the law would help avoid incidents such as the tragic murder of Salman Taseer, and tried to generate goodwill by hinting Muslims and Christians worshipped the same God: the worship of God furthers fraternity and love, not hatred and division. That is exactly what Muslims believe, that Jews, Christians and Muslims worship the same deity.
Great words. But the problem is that they come at the wrong time for Pakistan. Instead of calming down the controversy, this would fan it. Let me explain.
This law is not about Pakistani Christians. The anti-blasphemy law traps more Muslims in its net than Christians. In fact, a far larger number of Muslim Pakistanis have been convicted under the law, as the recent case of a conviction of a mosque imam and his son indicates. This does not mean the law should not be amended or repealed. It must be either amended or repealed because it is being abused. For example, the 45-year-old mosque imam and his 20-year-old son were convicted for life this month because they dared remove a poster on their shop window advertising a religious event that contained Quranic verses. It is ridiculous. What mosque imam would commit blasphemy?
So the law itself does not victimize Christians only. And it is not a tool to target Christians.
The real problem over the law is between an extremist westernized minority of Pakistanis who ridicule religion and between another extremist religious minority that takes religion to extreme.
The extremist westernized minority wants no religion at all and keeps talking foolishly about European secularism, which is misplaced in Pakistan. This provokes the religious extremist minority into paranoia and pushes them to extremes, as in the case of the 26-year-old bodyguard who assassinated Governor Taseer. Caught between the two extremes are the majority of moderate, peaceful Pakistanis.
US and other western governments make matters worse by openly siding with the extremist westernized minority in Pakistan, provoking reaction.
The Pope thinks that by making his statement he is siding with the persecuted Christians. But the truth is, by making a statement that leaves no room for amendments to the law, the Pope is actually siding with the Pakistani extremist westernized minority.
And this is not helpful.
Unfortunately, the elected government of President Zardari lacks a single credible face with good understanding of the real problem that could convey this delicate balance to our foreign friends, including Pope Benedict, and ask them, like the Egyptians have done, to stay away from our internal matters.
In fact, the PPP is full of people like Senator Sherry Rehman who are using the controversial law to settle scores against religious political groups. And that is exactly what extremist religious groups are doing, using the law to get back at the extremist westernized minority.
What Pakistan needs is to de-politicize the discussion over the anti-blasphemy law. Extremist westernized Pakistani minority and its religious extremist counterpart must not be allowed to lead the debate or use it for their own political gains. The government can publicly recognize that the controversial law is not a Muslim-Christian issue but an issue between two self-centered extremes who are hijacking it for their own motives. This way, the debate would be brought back to the moderate mainstream.
While we work this out, our foreign friends can help the most by taking a hike.
A word to Pope Benedict: While recognizing your good intention, I cannot but suspect an element of politics to your statement. Nothing has happened to Pakistani Christians that resembles what happened in India to Indian Christians in 2008 and 2009, when hundreds of churches and Christian houses were gutted by Hindu extremist mobs. In some cases, nuns were sexually harassed and violated. These cases are fresh and well documented. Not to mention the horrific case of an Australian priest and his two underage boys who were burned alive by Hindu extremists. We never heard the Pope speak about those incidents. Your diplomats did say something about them but at a much lower level and quite shyly compared to how you spoke on Egypt and Pakistan. This distinction does not help your message, to say the least.

But when calling the leader of any reliegon anything negative things we have to remember that he has his own flock of sheep so we should be mindful of not upsetting others as others may then get involved in the same game. That is he has to control his sheeps.. But he shouldnot poke his nose into others matters specially this LAW OF BLASPHEMY IN PAKISTAN..
Yes i can agree that we should not start fighting & bad language for pope, but we should tell him about this serious matter with HIKMAT (wisdom) & if necessary from BIBLICAL references.. I think brother Zakir Nakir will be in much better position to reply to this..
But a decent reply (with wisdom & logic) should be given to Pope from Pakistan Govt on this issue thats for sure..

Actually we should be calling him a terrorist because Pope was heavily involved in killing Jews in Poland when he was a German soldier. But since he didnt kill any Muslims, I didnt call him a terrorist.

Pope should keep his nose where it belongs. Before, criticizing and advising others, he should look into his own house and stop his homosexuals, gays and paedophiles priests and bishops abusing young girls, boys and married women.

Christians world is so immoral and decadent that 8-10 young boys are given free condoms to have safe sex; 10-12 young girls are getting pregnant; 40% of babies born are illegitimate; incest is getting epidemic; father are impregnating their daughters; men are getting married to men; women are getting married to women and illicit sex is happening in every where like animals do in jungles.

His followers are not giving a good example how to lead a Christian life. Instead they abuse Christianity and encourage secularism in their countries.

پوپ ایک نیوٹرل آدمی ہوتا ہے۔ تمام مذاہب کے لوگ اس کی عزت کرتے ہیں۔ توہین رسالت کے قانون کے حوالے سے پاکستان کے خلاف بیان دے کر پوپ نے پاپ کیا ہے۔ ایسے آدمی کو فوراً اپنے منصب سے الگ کرنا چاہئے۔ امریکہ یورپ اور مسلمان دشمن طاقتوں کے آلہ کار کے طور پر پوپ کا یہ بیان عالمی سازش کا حصہ ہے۔ کیا امریکہ اور یورپ میں مسلمان نہیں بستے۔ کبھی پوپ نے ان کے خلاف درندگی کے مظاہرے پر بات کی ہے۔ دنیا بھر کے مسلمان بالخصوص پاکستانی مسلمان عشق رسول کے حوالے سے کچھ بھی برداشت کرنے کے لئے تیار نہیں۔ تم برداشت کی بات کرتے ہو۔ ماں باپ اپنی بے عزتی پر کوئی ردعمل ظاہر نہ کریں مگر کیا ان کا بیٹا اگر وہ واقعی ان کا بیٹا ہے تو کیا وہ یہ قبول کر لے گا۔ رحمت اللعالمین نے خود اپنے دشمنوں کو معاف کیا اور ان سے کوئی بدلہ نہ لیا تو کیا ان کے جانثاران کے غلام بھی سب کچھ سنتے رہیں اور کچھ نہ بولیں۔ صلح حدیبیہ کے موقع پر معاہدے میں بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم پر اعتراض ہوا۔ حضرت علیؓ نے مٹا دیا پھر کفار کی طرف سے محمد رسول اللہ پر اعتراض ہوا تو حضرت علیؓ نے مٹانے سے انکار کر دیا تو پھر خود حضور نے اپنے ہاتھ سے مٹا دیا۔ قانون ہمارا ہے، مسیحی خاتون آسیہ پاکستانی ہے تو اس میں دوسروں کی مداخلت کا کیا جواز ہے۔ کیا جمہوریت اور انسانی حقوق کے نام پر عالم اسلام اور دوسرے ممالک کے خلاف جنگ آزمائی اور ظلم و ستم جائز ہے؟ دہشت گردی کے بہانے سے ہزاروں لوگ موت کے گھاٹ اتار دیئے گئے اور کبھی پوپ صاحب نہیں بولے۔ بھارت میں مسیحیوں کے چرچ جلائے گئے۔ ساری دنیا میں چرچا ہوا۔ مگر پوپ نہیں بولے تو اب یہ تہذیبوں کا تصادم نہیں یہ مذہبوں کی جنگ ہے۔ تم مولوی کو تنگ نظر کہتے ہو مگر اب پادری اور مولوی میں کیا فرق رہ گیا ہے؟ پوپ نے اسقاط حمل کے قانون کی حمایت کی۔ تمہاری عورتوں نے اپنے بطن سے پلنے والی زندگیوں کو قتل کیا۔ یہ غیر شرعی ہے۔ ہم نہیں بولے۔ پوپ نے ہم جنس پرستی کے قانون کو جائز قرار دیا یہ غیر فطری ہے۔ ہم نہیں بولے۔ تمہارا ملک ہے تمہارا قانون ہے جو چاہے کرتے ہو کرتے رہو۔ تم نے اپنا پورا معاشرہ گندا کر لیا۔ کسی نے اعتراض نہیں کیا۔ تو تمہیں بھی مداخلت کرنے کا حق نہیں۔
توہین رسالت کا قانون تمام رسولوں کی گستاخی کے لئے بنا ہے۔ ہم حضرت یسوع مسیحؑ کو اپنا پیغمبر مانتے ہیں۔ انجیل مقدس جو اس وقت تمہارے ہاتھوں میں ہے۔ اصل کتاب کی نقل بھی نہیں ہے۔ ہم چرچ کی اپنی مسجد کی طرح عزت کرتے ہیں۔ ہمارے قومی جھنڈے میں اقلیتوں کا سفید رنگ موجود ہے۔ ہم نے سب سے بڑی عدالت سپریم کورٹ کا چیف جسٹس ایک مسیحی جسٹس اے آر کارنیلس کو بنایا۔ مسلمان ججوں سے بھی زیادہ اس کی عزت کی۔ وہ بھی بلاشبہ ایک عظیم انسان تھا۔ اس نے کہا کہ میں پاکستانی ہوں۔ اس لئے میں آئینی مسلمان ہوں ہم مسلمان ہیں تو ہم مسیحی بھی ہیں کہ مسیح پر ایمان لانا ہمارے ایمان کا حصہ ہے۔ پوپ ہمارے لئے بھی محترم ہے مگر وہ اب ایک متنازعہ آدمی ہے۔ وہ تنہا ایسا بیان دے ہی نہیں سکتا۔ بشپ کونسل پہلے کسی معاملے کی منظوری دیتی ہے اور پھر پوپ بولتا ہے۔ یہ سازش کسی منصوبہ بندی کا حصہ ہے۔ یہ بیان دے کر پوپ مذہبی پیشوا نہیں رہا۔ سیاسی لیڈر بن گیا ہے۔ صدر بش نے صلیبی جنگ کا اعلان کیا تھا وہ آغاز تھا یہ انجام ہے۔ صلیبی جنگوں میں مسیحوں کو شکست ہوئی تھی۔ وار آن ٹیرر دہشت گردی کی جنگ اب مسیحوں اور مسلمانوں کے درمیان جنگ میں بدل چکی ہے۔ بشپ کو معلوم ہے کہ ہماری روایت میں ایک غزوہ ہند کا ذکر بھی ہے۔ غزوہ وہ لڑائی ہے جس میں رحمت اللعالمین رسول کریم حضرت محمد نے بنفس نفیس خود شرکت کی ہو۔ انہوں نے پوری دنیا کو امن سلامتی اور خیر کا پیغام دیا۔ اب امریکہ دہشت گردی کو ختم کرنے کے لئے دہشت گردی کر رہا ہے۔ امریکی دہشت گردی ریاستی اور عالمی ریاست گردی ہے۔ غزوہ ہند میں امریکہ، یورپ، اسرائیل اور بھارت کو شکست ہو گی اس کے لئے میدان جنگ پاکستان ہو گا۔ پوپ صاحب سیرت النبی میں سے صرف فتح مکہ کا واقعہ پڑھ لیں اور صلح حدیبیہ کا معاہدہ دیکھ لیں۔ لگتا ہے کہ وہ سیرت رسول سے واقف ہی نہیں۔ نجانے یہ لوگ مسلمانوں سے ڈرتے کیوں ہیں۔ مسلمان اتنے بے بس ہیں کہ وہ کوئی فیصلہ اپنے طور پر نہیں کر سکتے۔ اس کے باوجود سازشیں انہی کے خلاف ہوتی ہیں۔ حکومتوں کی بات تو بالکل سامنے کی ہے مگر پوپ کے اس بیان سے دکھ ہوا ہے اگر پوپ صاحب نے ڈاکٹر عافیہ کے حق میں بات کی ہوتی تو پھر اسے حق تھا کہ وہ آسیہ کے لئے بھی بات کرتا۔
کیا پوپ صاحب کو گوانتاناموبے جیل کا علم ہے جس کے لئے خود امریکی وزیر خارجہ ہلیری کلنٹن نے کہا کہ یہ امریکہ کی پیشانی پر کلنک کا ٹیکہ ہے۔ اب مجسمہ آزادی کی بجائے امریکہ کا قومی نشان گوانتاناموبے جیل ہونا چاہئے۔ صدر اوباما نے اپنی انتخابی تقریروں میں گوانتاناموبے جیل کو بند کرنے کا اعلان کیا تھا۔ مگر صدر بننے کے بعد ابھی یہ شرمناک جیل موجود ہے۔ کیا وہاں ایک قیدی کے طور پر صدر اوباما جانا چاہتے ہیں۔ اس کے علاوہ مسلمانوں کے علاقے میں بگرام جیل ہے جس میں صرف مسلمان قیدی ہیں۔ ڈاکٹر عافیہ کو بھی یہاں رکھا گیا ہے۔ کیا ان جیلوں میں ذلیل و خوار ہونے والے مسلمان قیدیوں کے لئے کوئی بات کی گئی۔ توہین رسالت کے حوالے سے گورنر پنجاب سلمان تاثیر کے قتل کا ذمہ دار کیری جونز ہے جس کے ایک منصفانہ اور احمقانہ بیان کے بعد سلمان تاثیر نے احتیاط سے کام نہ لیا اور عدالتی فیصلے کے باوجود شیخوپورہ جیل چلے گئے۔ پہلے معاملے کو مس ہینڈل کیا گیا۔ یہ ایک جذباتی معاملہ ہے۔ مجھے سلمان تاثیر کے قتل کا دکھ ہے۔ توہینِ رسالت ہماری عقیدت اور عقیدے کا مسئلہ ہے۔ ورنہ پہاڑ پر یا دریا میں تھوکنے والے کے پاس سوائے شرمندگی کے کچھ نہیں ہوتا۔ اب اس موقع پر پوپ کی طرف سے یہ بیان ایک غیر مذہبی واردات ہے۔ وہ لوگ پاکستان کو کمزور کرکے اپنے مذموم عزائم کی تکمیل چاہتے ہیں۔ یہ کبھی نہیں ہو گا۔ ہم لوگ خود عشق رسول کو متنازعہ بنانے میں لگے ہوئے ہیں۔ اس پر ایک الگ کالم لکھ رہا تھا کہ اس دوران پوپ کا ایک متنازعہ بیان سامنے آ گیا۔ قانون کے غلط استعمال کو روکنے کے کئی طریقے ہیں۔

بسم اللہ الرحمان الرحیم ....ویسے بہت سے ایسے پوپ اور ان کے چیلے ہمارے پاکستان میں بھی ہیں جو اس قانون کو ختم کرنا چاہتے ہیں...اللہ ایسے عقل کے اندھوں سے اسلام کو بچا کے رکھے. آمین
