KARACHI: Pakistans first private hydropower IPP established by Hub Power Company (Hubco) has commenced commercial operations.

An announcement here on Monday said that Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) first private Independent Power Producer (IPP) Laraib Energy Limited- the 84 MW New Bong Hydropower Project, has commenced commercial operations. It said that the Hub Power Company (Hubco) subsidiary, Laraib Energy Limited, was successfully commissioned on March 23.

The project will contribute 540 GWh of green energy annually into the National Grid under a 25 year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC).

Speaking on the occasion, CEO Hubco Zafar Iqbal Sobani said, This project will provide cheaper electricity and energy security to the country. Other benefits of the run-of-the river NBE HPP include replacement of some 135,000 tons of oil import valued in excess of US$ 100 million per annum and reduction in carbon emissions.

The project was scheduled to be completed in 42 months, but was completed 2 months earlier; comparing three similar low-head hydropower projects on the Ohio River, USA totalling 191 MW started a year before NBE but still have a year to begin commercial operations.

Hubco has thanked the successive Governments of Pakistan as well as the Azad Government of the State of Jammu and Kashmir, the Private Power and Infrastructure Board, WAPDA as well as NTDC, for their support and lending massive experience in hydropower.

Hubco also acknowledged the important part played by the AJ&K Private Power Cell of the AJ&K Hydroelectric Board in the projects long development journey.

The Asian Development Bank and other lending banks, multilaterals IDB, IFC and Proparco France and two domestic commercial banks NBP and HBL played a very pro-active and constructive role in structuring the project and the finance documents, thus making this pioneering project a reality, it was further pointed out.

The Hub power station was one of the first and largest Independent Power Producer (IPP) in Pakistan to be financed by the private sector in Southern Asia and one of the largest private power projects in the newly industrialized world.

The northern areas of Pakistan offer many opportunities for hydro power generation. A conservative estimate put the figure at 20,000 Mega Watts / Hr.
This amount of hydro energy can be produced if the government makes power generation as a serious priority.
Similarly we have been blessed with enough coal reserves in Thar to generate 100,000 Mega Watts / Hr of electricity for 20 years!!
We are content to purchase Furnace Oil through PSO and pay around 10 Billion Dollars foreign exchange for power generation in the country per year.
Similarly every large city of Pakistan can generate around 1000 Mega Watts / hr of electricity from municipality waste (refuse / garbage). And every medium city can generate 500 Mega Watts from this. This is being done in India and China for many years now.
It is a crying shame that no one wants to develop Pakistan, every one is busy developing there estates abroad.
We hear them tell us what they have done for us 24/7.
Not even the media asks them why they did not do what needed to be done!
And unfortunately a common person is so ignorant about "what needs to be done" that we can not take stock of these statuesque forces.
A common man is happy about income support programs, sasti roti, free laptops and solar panels and the jangla bus.
This all is changing with the introduction of a third force led by Imran Khan.
I hope he can at least educate the poor country men the cunning ways of these rulers who have gimmicks and emotional slogans up their sleeves. For us they have no real solutions to our problems beacuse in reality they are the cause of our problems!!
I pray a day comes when a common Pakistani realizes how bad he has been had by these unscrupulous scoundrels we call proudly as our leaders!!

you are 100% right. media is not realising the power shortage. they don't broadcast talkshow about our problems. instead they just broadcast talkshow about supreme court, polititions statements and parties politics which is not useful for people. they just waste our time and buy their commercials.

you can understand the seriousness of power shortage about 8000 mega watts while 84 mega watts project completed in 3 years. estimate that how many years we need to get the 8000 mega watts. govt should work on emergency basis.
