Pakistan becomes fifth largest remittances recipient country - My twist on Gilani's "Why dont they

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has become the fifth largest remittances recipient developing country in 2011, witnessing a strong growth of 25.8 per cent during the last year in 2011 compared to the 10.1 per cent growth in South Asia remittances.

The upward trend in remittances, during the period under review, was derived from a per annum average growth from UAE of 32.2 per cent followed by United Kingdom 30.1 per cent, Saudi Arabia 27.3 per cent, European Union countries 25.3 per cent, other GCC countries 15.1 per cent and United States of America 9.5 per cent from 2007-08 to 2010-11, states a document issued in Economic Survey of Pakistan.

During July-April 2011-12, workers remittances grew by 20.2 per cent and stood at $1.83 billion 10.9 billion. The cumulative increase of $1.83 billion during July-April 2011-12 over the July-April 2010-11 is largely attributed to the government efforts to divert remittances form the informal to the formal channel.

Since the launch of the Pakistan Remittances Initiative (PRI), the share of workers remittances coming through the banking channel has increased considerably from 75 per cent in 2009-10 to 91 per cent in 2011-12.

The World Bank estimated that the flow of remittances to developing countries in 2011 increased by 0.8 per cent from $ 325 billion 2010 and is expected to grow at seven to eight per cent annually till 2014.

Comments: Here's my previous thread of remittance. THREAD . Recently I bumped into this long report on Remittance Survey of Pakistan which helped me understand the breakdown by country much better. Notice most of the money comes from KSA and UAE, 2 countries that DO NOT allow citizenship to foreign citizens. So almost all those foreign Pakistanis in KSA and UAE sending money to Pakistan, are in these countries alone while their families are in Pakistan. These Pakistanis are NOT settled there. Majority are doing labor work to send money back to their families who couldnt join them.

Now coming to Gilani's "Why dont they leave then" part. You see Mr Gilani, when you say remittance are growing, it means more and more Pakistanis are leaving for UAE and KSA to perform slave labor and send money back, money which helps pay for your suite and that very trip to London. You see Mr Gilani, Pakistanis have been doing what you asked - "Why dont they leave". You see Mr Gilani it is actually you and (not) your seed who are sucking on those who have left Pakistan while you continue to insult them.

My family hates it when I ask for someone's death. So I'll refrain from that. Lekin Allah Zardari/Gilani ko hidayat de... apne paas bula ker.

Folks! Next time you hear this news "Remittance grew". Remember, it only means more Pakistanis have left Pakistan.

If you read Asif's commentary above, you'll get an answer. But to explain you below are the factors for this reality:

Most of us in Arab countries cant make that place home & work as slaves, we have no conscious of our rights there as Arab always degrade us, landing in Pakistan has a bonus for Arab workers that we wont be humiliated here as much as in Arab country, so we're less demanding, dont make a fuss.

On the other hand, in West, majority is educated, we've equal rights as natives, we make this place our home, bring family over hence less disposable income. Everyday life is systematic, rules being followed, you get treated with respect, overall we are conscious of what being a Pakistani should mean when we are there, we perhaps wish Pakistan to be as good as this place, hence, get frustrated quickly and remind fellows in Pakistan to do right!
Personally I'm a v low profile person, dont do this but answering your concern justifies what happens & what you see there

I think the reasons stated above for increase in remittances from the Mid East is valid.

As for the west, we are into 3rd and 4th generations here, which means familes are here and often born here. The need to send money to wife and offspring is the opposite in that all needs for immediate family are fulfilled here, and as a result the need to send funds "abroad" (Pakistan) is much less.

We earn more to live exist prosper in the West whereas those in the Mid East may have been there decades, all their earnings are of little use to them when they cannot buy anything of value and keep it there, or make investments like a house, or self owned business

In brief therefore the Majority of those in the west long term send because they can and feel a need to give something back to the land they love, whereas those with everything and everyone in Pakistan, HAVE to support them there. No criticism, just different lives and opportunities

If your parents AND children are here, the only ones left to support are those you help occassionally, cousins uncles aunts etc.

THE REAL Culprits are the ones like Gillani and Zardari and the Tind Clan, and of course ALL others who shift funds OUT of Pakistan in their billions that benefits Pakistan about as much as terminal cancer

Dear in Arab countries Pakistanis are not allowed to buy property or start businesses.
Whereas in Western countries Pakistanis are allowed to buy properties and businesses so they prefer to invest over there.
But when Imran will be in power there will be huge foreign investment by Pakistanis in Western countries.

AGain factually wrong information. There are thousands of Pakistani's in GCC countries (Bahrain) with Bahraini citizenship. I know of at least 10 Pakistani personaly with Saudi and UAE citizenship...so your statement that Arab countries don't allow Pakistani's citizenship is factually wrong. You try to blanket Pakistani's in Middle east as majority slaves which is also incorrect. Go to though the management of top banks in UAE and you will find Pakistani's. I would say it's a good twist to prove the remittances increase, the question was not asked to PM, ppl leaving Pakistan because there's not enough salaries/income here. They leave/immigrate to other country with their families and businesses due to disfunctional govt and they did not have enough confidence in the leadership of the country to improve that situation. Gilani responded to this by stating, “And why don’t they leave then, who is stopping them”.

yes..you have summed it up very well and so simply.
thats completely true..but I think there s more to the story..some of those that live in western countries start to think themselves superior than pakistanis..i mean they start of thinking them selves in the shoes of gora people..like colonial masters..that is where problems start.

Hello Hello Hello.It i better for u have full information.In UAE labour salary can be low but no one is slave here.As far as jobs are concerned Pakitan are In top mangment from CEO of oil refineries banks charterd Accountant Engenieers at every where at top Position u can sea Pakistani.In Buiness Within 5 minutes walk from my room i can have 5 Pakitani hotels.Rules and law and order is best in the world.No Rape no lotting.

Your comments are worth reading. I think the remittance statistics prove that most Pakistani origin people in West want revolution in Pakistan affecting the lives of ordinary Pakistanis or bomb India with nuclear weapons because most of their blood relations are allowed to join them on family reunion. Whereas the Middle east Pakistani knows they have to go back to Pakistan one day to join their family.
