Our shared quest for peace

The U.S., Pakistan and Afghanistan share a common stance against terrorism and continue to make common sacrifices in our fight against terrorism. Our shared quest for peace often gets overlooked as many begin to indulge in the blame game and conspiracy theories. The fact of the matter is that our success in regards to our shared peace objectives in the region is directly tied to each others success.

Those who are working to destabilize the region also see our nations as a common threat. It is in our best interests to maintain a healthy partnership and cooperate and coordinate to restore peace in the region.

We restate what General Joseph F. Dunford, Jr., Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, said regarding the importance of the regions security, stability and partnership: It is in our interests to have an enduring partnership with Pakistan. As our mission in Afghanistan transitions, there remains a need for our mutually beneficial relationship. Pakistan has cooperated with the US in our operations against al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations. Their actions in North Waziristan and other areas of western Pakistan have disrupted groups that are a threat to US personnel and objectives in Afghanistan.

General Joseph F. Dunford, Jr. added that the US will need to continue cooperation to defeat al Qaeda, support Pakistans stability and achieve lasting peace in Afghanistan.

Stakes in Pakistan: Incoming US military chief lists key interests

The United States has three strategic interests in Pakistan, according to the general expected to become the next chairman of US Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In his confirmation hearing before a panel of the US Senate on Thursday, Gen Joseph F Dunford Jr listed these interests as preventing al Qaedas resurgence, preventing nuclear proliferation and promoting regional stability.
The US and Pakistan share the common strategic interests of defeating al Qaeda and other extremist threats, ensuring regional stability, and furthering the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. We also share the goal of a stable peaceful Afghanistan, he told the Senate Committee on Armed Services.
Ties with Pakistan are fundamental to US national security interests, said Gen Dunford.

Asked by the panel about his views on assistance provided by the US to Pakistan under the Coalition Support Fund, the general said: Our assistance has enabled operations in Afghanistan and operations against al Qaeda and helped secure our strategic interests.

Talking about Pakistans role in bringing about peace in Afghanistan, Dunford stressed that security in both countries is linked. He added that the US military has been pleased with the neighbours recent bilateral efforts to address their security concerns
Both sides are working to ensure that concrete steps are taken to enhance their bi-lateral relationship and cooperation, he told the panel.

Asked what he thought were areas of divergent interests between the US and Pakistan, the general listed views on the use of proxies by Islamabad and Pakistan-India ties.
General Dunford currently heads the Marine Corps, the branch of the US military tasked with projecting power from the sea. He was nominated for top military post in the US by President Barack Obama on May 15 this year. If his nomination is confirmed by the US Senate, Dunford will take over from General Martin Dempsey as the 19th Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Better force the Indians to shut down their more than 30,000 consulates in Afghanistan which are already tasked to create a civil war kind of a situation in Pakistan all the way through Baluchistan. It is loud and clear that as long as Indians continue to trouble us under the umbrella / aegis of US Central Command in Afghanistan, the US AFPAK doctrine is bound to fail and everlasting peace in Afghanistan will be a mad man's dream.

What you have to do with our region...Go to your region and restore peace. Thanks

Is it not a fact that the terrorists see our nations as a common threat? Do they not issue threats against our nations and wish to see us part ways for the sake of gaining advantage? Is it not a fact that we've captured and killed some the top terrorist leaders through each other's assistance? Again, the truth is that the U.S. and Pakistan share a common stance against terrorism, and the proof lies in the fact that we've lost thousands of brave soldiers in fighting terrorism.

It is our desire to see peace prevail throughout the region because we do not want our hard work and sacrifices to go to waste. Our leaders continue to meet to address our shared concerns, and we have always viewed Pakistan's partnership as vital to our success in the region. You have to also keep in mind that the U.S. and Pakistan are two independent partner nations. We've faced certain difficulties and challenges in regards to our common objectives, but we've never allowed any disagreements to hold precedence over our shared peace objectives. The doubters have always doubted our partnership and will continue to do so. Our nations continue to move forward knowing it is simply imperative for us to remain unified and negate the common threat of terrorism through better cooperation and coordination.
