KUALA LUMPUR: Muslim countries should unite to protect themselves against external threats, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Tuesday after describing the US killing of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani as immoral.

The world’s oldest premier, who has in recent months stoked diplomatic tensions by speaking out on issues concerning the Muslim world, also said the US drone attack on Soleimani was against international laws.

Soleimani’s killing in Baghdad last Friday has sparked fears of a broader conflict in the Middle East. Mahathir, 94, said it could also lead to an escalation in “what is called terrorism”.

“The time is right for Muslim countries to come together,” Mahathir told reporters.

“We are no longer safe now. If anybody insults or says something that somebody doesn’t like, it is all right for that person from another country to send a drone and perhaps have a shot at me.”

About 50 people including burqa-wearing women gathered outside the Iranian embassy in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, to shout “Down, Down USA”.

Mahathir has tried to maintain good relations with Iran despite US sanctions on the Middle Eastern country. An estimated 10,000 Iranians live in Malaysia.

Last month, Mahathir hosted Iranian President Hassan Rouhani at a conference of Muslim leaders in Malaysia where they discussed boosting business, trading in each other’s currencies and keeping up with non-Muslim countries.

Mahathir’s recent comments on the treatment of Muslims in India and his criticism of the Saudi Arabia-based Organisation of Islamic Cooperation have soured Malaysia’s relations with both New Delhi and Riyadh.

“I speak the truth,” Mahathir said. “You do something that is not right, I think I have the right to speak out.”

Let me elaborate. Sulemani was a sectarian guy who was working around against Sunni and Kurdish groups in middle east to advance his country's sectarian designs. How could his death be used as a pretense for "Muslim unity"?

If this is a fact then I have one question to you.
If what you have written is a fact then how come it is hidden from Mahateer Muhammad? Why would he ask Muslims to unite to avenge the death of Sunni Muslims mass murderer ?
Also history proves quite a lot of weird things. Even if what you are saying is true, he could still become the reason of Muslims unity.

I can not peep into Mahathir's mind but may be its that casual uninformed remark that politicians make off an on. What i have stated is true and no person who follows middle east affairs would dispute it. Palestine and Kashmir are far bigger and objective issues to unite Muslims. Palestine could not unite the arabs , let alone Muslims so forget Muslim unity for now. See what happened to the summit in Malaysia. Muslim states are divided on ethnic , sectarian , geographic and political grounds and this division takes precedence over religion for the Muslim states

OR you could have just waited for a response from me before jumping to conclusion. Thanks but no thanks means, exactly that. That sorry we couldn't really give a toss about his killing and we are not going to overreact or get involved in any mess because of it nor should anyone else.
