HONOLULU — Chinese navy ships will steer into Pearl Harbor next month as part of a joint search-and-rescue training exercise with the U.S. military.
Three People’s Liberation Army ships will visit beginning Sept. 6, including a guided missile destroyer, a frigate and a supply ship. The Honolulu Advertiser reports that the USS Lake Erie will act as a host ship for the mission.
While details aren’t set, Capt. Darryn James of the Pacific Fleet says sailors will conduct an at-sea search-and-rescue exercise.
James told the newspaper that the joint exercise shows a commitment to improved safety across the region.
Analysts say China is seeking more stability in its relationship with the United States.
