well to be honest very difficult to say now, simply because we don't know how PTI emerges from this current scenario, yes there is fan following of Imran Khan in Karachi, he bloody won us the famous 1992 world cup, but lets just for a second minus imran khan from PTI and look whats left of it? nothing practically, same shah mehmood qureshi same other politician
secondly PTI's performance in KPK is very bad, to gain any political strength PTI only has to prove in KPK now
you are right about mustafa kamal but right now, sharjeel memon controls the city of Karachi and not MQM, most of the karachiites don't get this simple fact
Karachi's mandate as you see doesn't need to depend on little things like inclusion in PPP etc because MQM representatives are always on the ground in touch with the people
with my limited knowledge it may sound strange but the party has infect made a huge inroads in non mohajir areas esp pashtun, and baloch areas, biggest proof is MQM winning kaemari seat and one pashtun quaidabad seat
you will be surprised if MQM in next election spares no karachi seat for any other party
you don't normally see a political party running one of the largest ambulance system in one of the largest cities of the world, this very fact my friend distinguishes MQM and Karachi politics from others
in the last elections, the votes were given to imran khan not PTI, this time people will be a little more braineier and vote for PTI not imran khan
Well, MQM had potential - a long long time ago - but it lost that potential when it resorted to violence not just to fight the forces trying to oppress it but also unleashed it against fellow MQMers or basically anyone who didn't buy into their philosophy or rather AH's philosophy out of sheer vengeful, in fact I would call it petty, politics. I am sure you know a lot more than I do but I am a Karachiite down and out and just know a thing or two about the city, MQM's origination to its complete hold over the city and now where we are today. I have my own observations and two things that I strongly disagree with MQM is the use of violence to intimidate its opponents plus the vengeful aspect of it and the other one is to resort to the use of ethnic card even after graduating to Muttahida from Mohajir.
I mostly think that its AH's leadership that is holding MQM back. It still has potential as people have very short memories when it comes to politics. I still think that if the real middle class educated leadership from Karachi and Hyderabad is allowed to grow and gain control of the party instead of the london secretatriat then MQM may become a force to reckon with if its solely invested in the future of urban sindh and its people. I personally think that AH is holding it back - case in point is the current episode where he indulges in emotional melodrama to coax people into doing what he wants them to do. This is when a party go from sort of a collective voice of the leadership to be run on the whim of one person who is sitting thousands of miles away and has not stepped foot on this soil for over 22 years and not just that - he is in bad health and also mired in legal troubles in London.
Anyway, going back to MQM and elections - you are right that you and I will be here. Lets see what the results will be in the next elections if they are conducted fair and square and we don't see the mass scale and blatant rigging like we saw in the last elections or elections before.
The only thing i will say is that the people of Karachi if they voted for PTI in last elections, was not for IK or PTI rather it was a vote for change or anti incumbent vote. It reminded me of the LB elections of 1987 when MQM had a wave of support and it was mainly an anti incumbent parties vote. I think that PTI and IK will lose support if they continue on this path as Karachi population will get weary of them pretty fast.
