Death of Bin Laden

Osama Bin Laden's death Live
The raid: How it happened
Suburban fortress
The long hunt for Bin Laden
Pakistan's main intelligence agency, the ISI, has said it is embarrassed by its failures on al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.

An ISI official told the BBC the compound in Abbottabad where Bin Laden was killed by US forces on Sunday had been raided in 2003.

But the compound "was not on our radar" since then, the official said.

He gave new details of the raid, saying Bin Laden's young daughter had said she saw her father shot.

Bin Laden, 54, was the founder and leader of al-Qaeda. He is believed to have ordered the attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001, as well as a number of other deadly bombings.

'Caught by surprise'
The ISI official told the BBC's Owen Bennett-Jones in Islamabad that the compound in Abbottabad, just 100km (62 miles) from the capital, was raided when under construction in 2003.

It was believed an al-Qaeda operative, Abu Faraj al-Libi, was there.

But since then "the compound was not on our radar, it is an embarrassment for the ISI", the official said. "We're good, but we're not God."

The compound is just a few hundred metres from the Pakistan Military Academy - the country's equivalent of West Point or Sandhurst.

The ISI official also gave new or differing accounts of some of the events of Sunday's raid. They included:

There were 17-18 people in the compound at the time of the attack
The Americans took away one person still alive, possibly a Bin Laden son
Those who survived the attack included a wife, a daughter and eight to nine other children, not apparently Bin Laden's; all had their hands tied by the Americans
The surviving Yemeni wife said they had moved to the compound a few months ago
Bin Laden's daughter, aged 12 or 13, saw her father shot
The official said it was thought the Americans wanted to take away the surviving women and children but had to abandon the plan when one of the helicopters malfunctioned.

Analysis

BBC News, Islamabad
Clearly there were people helping Bin Laden in this location... were they state employees, were they simply from Taliban-related groups, were they from the intelligence agencies?

For all Americans may ask the questions, I doubt they will get any answers. There will be ambiguity about this and the Pakistanis will deny they had any knowledge whatsoever.

The establishment here is made up of army leadership, intelligence agency leadership and some senior civil servants, and they have always run Pakistan, whether democratic governments or military governments, and those people do have connections with jihadis.

The difficulty the West has is in appreciating there are more than 20 different types of jihadi organisations, and al-Qaeda is just one of them. The state has different policies towards different types of group and that subtlety is often lost on Western policy-makers.

The helicopter was destroyed by the special forces unit.

The US has not commented on anyone it captured or had planned to capture, other than saying it had taken Bin Laden's body.

The ISI official said the organisation had recovered some documents from the compound.

The CIA is already said to be going through a large number of hard drives and storage devices seized in the raid.

White House counter-terrorism adviser John Brennan said there had been concern Pakistani forces would deploy to counter the US Navy Seal team conducting the raid but it had avoided any confrontation.

The ISI official said: "We were totally caught by surprise. They were in and out before we could react."

Our correspondent says residents near the compound in Abbottabad reported that Pakistani soldiers had asked them to switch off their lights an hour before the attack, but the ISI official said this was not true and that it had no advance knowledge of the raid.

Earlier, in an opinion piece in the Washington Post, President Asif Ali Zardari admitted Bin Laden "was not anywhere we had anticipated he would be".

But he denied the killing suggested Pakistan was failing in its efforts to tackle terrorism.

Mr Zardari said Pakistan had "never been and never will be the hotbed of fanaticism that is often described by the media".

"Such baseless speculation may make exciting cable news, but it doesn't reflect fact," he said.

"Pakistan had as much reason to despise al-Qaeda as any nation. The war on terrorism is as much Pakistan's war as it is America's."

Mr Brennan had said it was "inconceivable that Bin Laden did not have a support system" in Pakistan.

Pakistani Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir tried to draw a line under the matter, saying: "Who did what is beside the point... This issue of Osama Bin Laden is history."

'Geronimo'
Bin Laden was America's most wanted man but had eluded capture for more than a decade.

US officials say that after DNA tests they are "99.9%" sure that the man they shot and killed and later buried at sea was Bin Laden.

President Obama: "We were reminded again that there is a pride in what this nation stands for"
US President Barack Obama watched the entire operation in real time in the White House with his national security team.

Mr Brennan said: "The minutes passed like days."

CIA director Leon Panetta narrated via a video screen from a separate Washington office, with Bin Laden given the code name Geronimo.

Mr Panetta's narration lasted several minutes. "They've reached the target... We have a visual on Geronimo... Geronimo EKIA (enemy killed in action)."

Mr Obama said: "We got him."

Bin Laden, his son Khalid, trusted personal courier Sheikh Abu Ahmed and the courier's brother were all killed, along with an unidentified woman.

Bin Laden was shot above his left eye, blowing away a section of his skull, and was also shot in the chest.

The BBC's Andrew North in Washington says the White House is still discussing whether to release a video that was made of Bin Laden's burial from an aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea, which some Islamic scholars have said did not conform with tradition.

Our correspondent says many people will want proof that Bin Laden is dead but the White House will be concerned about the reaction if the video, and still photographs of the body, are released.

I just heard on BBC News24 headlines, the news reader says, ISI said they are embarrassed of their failures to find OBL who was living for 6 years in the house.

ISI giving comments to the international media and not talking to their own nation?

This is disgusting behaviour.

How can a country primer agency give the news to international media that OBL was living in Abbotabad for 6 years?
How the hell do they know he was there for 6 years, when until yesterday they were not aware?

Pakistan Militarys failures are outstanding. It is height of callous behaviour, that according to the news the radars were jammed in Pakistan through the satellites.

If it is true, who was monitoring the radars? If they couldnt do anything about the jammed radars, at least they should have issue an immediate alert to look for a real and present danger in the air, using human eyes and other methods?

How it is possible for a country not to be aware that its radars have failed for almost 2 hours?

Americans says, they informed Pakistan when they were out of Pakistani airspace.

According to some reports they used an airbase near Jalalabad, flown over Pakistani airspace for almost 30minutes before reaching Abbotsabad. Some reports say they were there for almost 90 minutes, including firing, fight, searching for Bin Laden body, identify him, carry him with them, remove the bodies of their own soldiers who either died or injured in helicopter crash. Make their way back to Afghanistan in another 30 minutes.

This is anything between 1.30 to 2 hours of action. And our military was sleeping?

Then as I wrote before, ARY news reporter was showing between 1 to 2 a.m. Pakistani time a Pakistani army helicopter is crashed. If media knew, why Army didnt? It would have been easier to find out if one of their helicopters was in the area at the time? If it was not then whose helicopter is crashed?
Will some body explain me, why even after the news of a helicopter crash on Pakistan media immediately, there was no response by the army?

After almost 2 days, shamefully no responses, no explanations.

I have absolutely no doubts, Pakistani establishments, Army, ISI, the civilians Government take Pakistanis as mugs, as slaves and herds. They know people will shout for few days and then sit at home.

They also know if you come out, they will hit you, kill you and control you by using inhuman practices.

Pakistani nation is dead, there is only one person who is holding the press conferences and asking awkward questions, Imran Khan.

The rest of the political parties are completely quite. They are all given share of the pie by Zardari.

Long live the corrupt political leaders, useless army Generals and agencies heads. People in any other country of the world there would have been clamour and uproar.

Pakistan is quite, amazing.

Bin Laden lived in Pakistan compound five-six years: US --What is this???

bin_laden_house_543.jpg

WASHINGTON: Osama bin Laden lived for the past five to six years in the compound deep inside Pakistan where the al Qaeda leader was killed by US forces, President Barack Obamas counterterrorism adviser said on Tuesday.

Bin Laden, who was living in Afghanistan before a 2001 US-led invasion helped topple its Taliban regime, was holed up in a compound in the military garrison town of Abbottabad in Pakistan before Sundays operation to kill him.

Well I think the latest information is that he was in this compound for the past five or six years and he had virtually no interaction with others outside that compound. But yet he seemed to be very active inside the compound, White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan said on the CBS Early Show program.

And we know that he had released videos and audios. We know that he was in contact with some senior al Qaeda officials, Brennan added.

So what were trying to do now is to understand what he has been involved in over the past several years, exploit whatever information we were able to get at the compound and take that information and continue our efforts to destroy al Qaeda, Brennan added.

The fact that the al Qaeda chief had lived in the compound for such a long time has prompted some US lawmakers to demand a review of the billions of dollars in aid the United States provides Pakistan, which is fighting a Taliban insurgency.

Brennan also said the United States was considering whether to release photographs and video taken during the raid but has not yet made a decision.

We want to make sure that were able to do it in a thoughtful manner. We also want to anticipate what the reaction might be on the part of al Qaeda or others to the release of certain information so that we can take the appropriate steps beforehand, Brennan told CNN.

Any other material, whether it be photos or videos or whatever else we are looking at it and well make the appropriate decisions, Brennan said.

Asked about any computers, documents and other material seized at the compound, Brennan said the material was being reviewed by US authorities.

What were most interested in is seeing if we can get any insight into any terrorist plot that might be underway so that we can take the measures to stop any type of attack planning.

Secondly, were trying to look and see whether or not there are leads to other individuals within the organization or insights into their (al Qaeda) capabilities, Brennan said.

He said the United States was eager to learn from the material about the circumstances of bin Ladens residence in Abbottabad.

I know the Pakistanis are interested in this how did bin Laden stay at that compound for the past six years or so and be undetected? What type of support did he have outside of that compound in the Abbottabad area or more broadly within Pakistan? Brennan said.

as a visitor to pakistan one is led to believe that the pak army is amongst the best in the world.truth could not be further.on a trip to bandali near kuiratta i decided to climb a mountain that has a radar fixed on top.after reaching the top i couldn't believe it of the four soldiers manning the position 2 were snoring away fast asleep and the other two were skinning a chicken (probably stolen).now this radar if it was in working condition didn't seem to be connected to any computer or radar screen.truth is the pak army is a two bit mufth khor eastablishment that is has been on a permenent drip and depends on its nuke arsenal if it has one to flex it's muscles.our soldiers are under payed/under fed /under educated /under trained any any other under you can think of.the cream is licked away by boys who pass out from kukool who learn early that to survive two things need to be put to practice from day one corruption and nepotism.even our hardware including our beloved radar seems badly outdated .obama and co watched the whole raid in real time now thats what we call technology.as far as a muslim army goes we rank amongst the best but still a long away from the middle rankings like india and turkey.

All active members of ISI should resign and go into retirement or commit suicide.

Seppuku, (Sape-puu-kuu) the Japanese formal language term for ritual suicide (Hara-kiri (Har-rah-kee-ree) is the common language term.), was an intregal aspect of feudal Japan (1192-1868). It developed as an intregal part of the code of bushido and the discipline of the samurai warrior class.

ISI its time you left Pakistan for good.... nothing good has ever come out of you guys. You are like Taliban, all words no action. If there is any action its just spilling of poor Pakistani people blood.

I tell you.... for every action there is always an equal opposing action. If we sow Rose we will harvest Rose, if we sow Neem
(Azadirachta indica)
we will harvest Neem. We will be lucky if Afghanistan does not go for a law suit, against Pakistan for all the War Damages.

ISI official admits failures in OBL saga

5-4-2011_81074_l.jpg

ISLAMABAD: An officer of Pakistan’s intelligence agency has said that the presence of Osama bin Laden (OBL) in a compound in Abbottabad and ISI’s lack of knowledge on this is embarrassing, Geo News reported.

Talking to media men here, an ISI official said a 12-year daughter of OBL is under custody of Pakistani government. She saw US troops shoot her father to death, he said.

He said there were 17 or 18 people present in compound at the time of US raid.

He said, “But that a US chopper crashed amid operation, so US marine commandos would have taken all people back to America.”

Pakistan's main intelligence agency, the ISI, has said it is embarrassed by its failures on al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.

An ISI official told the BBC the compound in Abbottabad where Bin Laden was killed by US forces on Sunday had been raided several years ago.

But the compound "was not on our radar" since then, the official said.

The government of Pakistan has categorically denied any knowledge of the raid before it took place.

No base within Pakistan was used by US forces, the ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement.

It went on: "US helicopters entered Pakistani airspace making use of blind spots in the radar coverage due to hilly terrain."

However, the ministry defended the ISI, saying: "As far as the target compound is concerned, ISI had been sharing information with CIA and other friendly intelligence agencies since 2009."

The ISI official gave new details of the raid, saying Bin Laden's young daughter had said she saw her father shot.

He told the BBC's Owen Bennett-Jones in Islamabad that the compound in Abbottabad, just 100km (62 miles) from the capital, was raided when under construction in 2003.

It was believed an al-Qaeda operative, Abu Faraj al-Libi, was there.

But since then, "the compound was not on our radar, it is an embarrassment for the ISI", the official said. "We're good, but we're not God."

He added: "This one failure should not make us look totally incompetent. Look at our track record. For the last 10 years, we have captured Taliban and al-Qaeda in their hundreds - more than any other countries put together."

The ISI official also gave new or differing accounts of some of the events of Sunday's raid. They included:

There were 17-18 people in the compound at the time of the attack.
The Americans took away one person still alive, possibly a Bin Laden son.
Those who survived the attack included a wife, a daughter and eight to nine other children, not apparently Bin Laden's; all had their hands tied by the Americans.
The surviving Yemeni wife said they had moved to the compound a few months ago
Bin Laden's daughter, aged 12 or 13, saw her father shot.
The official said it was thought the Americans wanted to take away the surviving women and children but had to abandon the plan when one of the helicopters malfunctioned.
