Governor Sindh launch project for revival of Empress Market and Saddar area

Karachi, March 23, 2014 (PPI-OT): Governor Sindh Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan on Sunday formally launched the project for revival of surroundings of Empress Market and adjoining areas of Saddar. He was accompanied by Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Senior provincial minister for Education Nisar Khoro and other members of provincial assembly. Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui, Administrator Karachi Rauf Akhtar Farooqui, Metropolitan Commissioner Samiuddin Siddiqui and other officers were also present on this occasion.
Governor Sindh said this project which is expected to be completed in 24 months holds much importance for the city and its completion would give this whole area a new refreshing look and it would help solving the problems facing by citizens in the heart of city and controlling air pollution due to heavy traffic flow in this area.
Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui in his briefing, presented the salient features of the project which include complete revival of Saddar area with re-routing of public transport, development of Saddar as a traffic free pedestrian zone and introduction of traditional system of trams and electronic carts as mode of internal transportation, development of art and cultural activities and value addition to area by improved environment including promotion to food and entertainment activities, improved shopping environment by creating public convenience, improved pavements, walkways illumination scheme, landscape elements, security and safety measures and public toilets and by bringing back the night life in Saddar by creating Night Bazaars.
He said Commissionerate Karachi Division and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation will jointly implement this project covering an area of about 925,000sqr Meter with its boundary at M.A Jinnah Road in North, Mansfield Street in East, Sarwar Shaheed Road in South and Preedy Street/Abdullah Haroon Road in West.
The first phase of this project would consist of preparation of comprehensive master planning of the entire area, Re-routing of public transport on Mansfield Street and Re-designing and Signalization at 6 intersections of the project area. In the subsequent phases several revival schemes as per master plan shall be undertaken zone by zone and to be implemented with the support of stakeholders and NGOs/Civil Society.
