Israel should lead investigation into attack on Gaza flotilla, says US

Turkey's demands for international inquiry blocked at meeting of United Nations security council

Photograph: Getty Images The United States has blocked demands at the UN security council for an international inquiry into Israel's assault on the Turkish ship carrying aid to Gaza that left nine pro-Palestinian activists dead.
A compromise statement instead calls for an impartial investigation which Washington indicated could be carried out by Israel.
Turkey pressed for the security council to launch an investigation similar to Richard Goldstone's inquiry into last year's fighting in Gaza which prompted protests from Israel when it concluded that Israel and Hamas were probably guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Ankara wanted the investigation into the raid on the Mavi Marmara to result in the prosecution of officials responsible for the assault and the payment of compensation to the victims.
But in hours of diplomatic wrangling, the US blocked the move and instead forced a statement that called for "a prompt, impartial, credible and transparent investigation conforming to international standards". The US representative at the security council discussions, Alejandro Wolff, indicated that Washington would be satisfied with Israel investigating itself when he called for it to undertake a credible investigation.
The Israeli government is certain to launch its own inquiry in part as a response to domestic criticism that its forces were ill-prepared for the resistance they met on the ship. But any self-inquiry is likely to be met with the same scepticism beyond Israel's borders that met its investigations into last year's Gaza war and its 2006 invasion of Lebanon which criticised aspects of the handling of the operations but did not challenge the underlying claim that they were essential for Israel's security.
The Americans also blocked criticism of Israel for violating international law by assaulting a ship in international waters in the security council statement proposed by Turkey, the Palestinians and Arab nations.
The US instead forced a broader statement that condemned "those acts which resulted in the loss" of life.
However, the security council statement did criticise Israel's siege of Gaza as "not sustainable" and called for a "sustained and regular flow of goods and people to Gaza, as well as unimpeded provision and distribution of humanitarian assistance throughout Gaza".
Turkey's foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, called the raid on the Mavi Marmara "tantamount to banditry and piracy; it is murder conducted by a state".
The French ambassador to the UN, Gerard Araud, said "there was disproportionate use of force and a level of violence which nothing justifies and which we condemn".
Wolff told the security council that the organisers of the flotilla had been irresponsible in trying to deliver aid by sea in the face of the Israeli blockade.

Gaza aid flotilla: Israeli sabotage suspected

Israel's military may have sabotaged two boats carrying Free Gaza activists after both malfunctioned at the same time in the same way prior to the raid

Israels-raid-on-the-Free--006.jpg
Israel's raid on the Free Gaza flotilla has sparked protests around the world. Two passenger boats may also have been sabotaged prior to the raid Photograph: Yossi Zamir/EPA Israel gave strong indications today that its forces had secretly sabotaged some of the ships bound for Gaza as part of the freedom flotilla.
Matan Vilnai, the deputy defence minister, was asked on Israel Radio whether there had not been a smarter alternative to direct assault. He answered that "all possibilities had been considered," adding: "The fact is that there were less than the 10 ships that were due to participate in the flotilla."
The comments appeared to dovetail with reports that two of the vessels malfunctioned at the same time and in the same way. Challenger I and Challenger II, carrying 36 activists, were forced into port in Cyprus on Friday evening when steering systems on both ships broke down on the passage from Heraklion in Crete, a campaign spokeswoman said.
Challenger II also started taking on water after the bilge pump suddenly stopped working and an inspection yesterday revealed "very suspicious" faults, according to Greta Berlin, a spokeswoman for Free Gaza.
An unnamed Israeli Defence Force source who briefed the Knesset's foreign affairs and defence committee on the widely criticised armed interception of the flotilla at sea, also spoke of "grey operations" being mounted against the flotilla. No further detail was reported, probably because of the military censorship rules binding the Israeli media.
Both were forced to radio distress signals to Cypriot ports and Berlin said the captain of Challenger I, Denis Healey, was "frightened that he was not going to be able to get the boat in".
"They had mechanical probles on Friday afternoon at around 3.30pm when they were going towards Cyprus to pick people up. They had been travelling from Crete and had been at sea for about 30 hours," she said.
Once in port in northern Cyprus, Healey had to repair hydraulic lines on the vessel. Challenger II had to pull alongside the main Turkish ship, the Mavi Marmara, on the high seas 70 miles off Cyprus, to transfer its passengers before it limped into port.
The unnamed Israeli officer also said that military planners had considered trying to stop the Mavi Marmara rather than board it but had decided against it because the Turkish ship was too fast.
There is at least one precedent for naval sabotage by the Israelis. Flotilla 13, the elite naval commando unit that carried out Monday's raid, reportedly blew up a ship named al-Awda (the Return) which was chartered by the PLO in 1988 to dramatise the plight of Palestinian refugees. It sank in Limassol harbour, Cyprus.

Prof Avi Shlaim: I'm sickened by Israel's insane massacre on Gaza convoy

professor-avi-shlaim-image-1-205754087.jpg

A shiver went down my spine when I heard the news of the IDF's insane attack on the unarmed boats.

It was with great patriotic pride I served in the IDF from 1964 to 1966. In those days it was true to its name: the Israel Defence Force.

Over the past four decades, my army has been subverted into the brutal police force of a savage colonial power.

This is Israel's most right-wing and racist government in history. Its behaviour is increasingly irrational and last night it crossed yet another red line by ordering a totally unprovoked attack on innocent civilians.

The commandos perpetrated a cold-blooded massacre.

Israel claims its soldiers acted in self-defence against terrorists wielding knives and clubs. Anyone who believes this will believe anything.

Britain should propose EU sanctions to force Israel to end the occupation of the Palestinian territories - the most prolonged and brutal military occupation of modern times.

yet another show of arrogance and power from isreal
but i do not hear any one condemning these actions, no pakistani , no british ,no usa ?

no so called muslim organizations like who were shouting yesterday about lahore........

truth is ..........it may be time when we should take control in our own hands.....as long as we let these cowards guide us we will always end up in disaster

Pakistan DID condemn brother

BUT There is something wrong here. How did Talat get permission to be aboard the aid ship? Whay is he being released? Does he have any connections with Israelis, or US? Or is he working for the interest of the Americans? He had also interviewed two Americans few months ago. I am little suspicious and skeptical about his activities there. SOMETHING IS WRONG

Spoken like a true ZH fan!
Well done!
Great analysis. Very indepth and thought provoking.

How did Talat get permission to get aboard ship?
Like the other 700 people including journalists from Al Jazeera,Turkish TV and a horde of peace activists, human rights activists and noble laureates.

Why is he being released?
Like the other 700 who are being released because it is illegal to keep them.

Does he have any connections with Israelis, or US?
There were more than 700 people on the ships, did they all have 'connections' with the Israelis and US? If you did deep enough even Zaid Hamid will have connections with the US because he is a Jihadi from Afghanistan and we all know where the dollars came from back then!

He had also interviewed two Americans few months ago.
Fahd Hussain had interviewed Shimon Peres on Live TV in Pakistan once. He is definitely an 'agent' then. A journalist should NEVER interview anyone from a hostile country because that automatically makes him an 'agent'!

SOMETHING IS WRONG!
Yea...that is very clear! ;)
