Head of Flotilla raid probe threatens to resign, no co-operation from Israel, whole probe thing is a drama
JERUSALEM: The head of an Israeli commission set up to investigate a deadly Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla threatened to resign unless the probe is given wider powers, Israeli media said.
Yaakov Tirkel, a retired Supreme Court judge, told Justice Minister Yaakov Neeman that he would leave the post if his demands were not met, the private TV network reported.
He called for "the independent public commission," whose work officially started on Monday, to become a government commission of inquiry with the power to recommend sanctions against political and military leaders. Tirkel also sought two assistants for the three members and two foreign observers that make up the panel, the report said, adding that the judge agreed to put off his resignation until cabinet considered the changes on Sunday.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defence Minister Ehud Barak and military chief of staff Gaby Ashkenazi have agreed to appear before the internal commission.
Israel set up the so-called Tirkel Commission under pressure from the United States a fortnight after its commandos killed nine Turkish activists on May 31 after intercepting a six-ship fleet carrying aid to Gaza.
The probe is limited to determining the validity under international law of Israel's Gaza sea blockade (wow so no one cares about loss of human life), the deadly raid in international waters, and the actions of the activists and the aid flotilla's organisers.

ANKARA: All but two of the nine Turks killed in an Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound aid ship were shot more than once, and five died from bullet wounds to the head, according to forensic reports.
The reports were made available to AFP Tuesday by lawyers for the victims families, who have petitioned Turkish prosecutors to investigate the May 31 bloodshed on the Turkish Mavi Marmara ferry. The forensic examinations were carried out in Turkey by the government-run Forensic Institute.
The findings make it clear the Israeli forces shot to kill the activists and not to overpower them, one of the lawyers, Yasin Divrak, told AFP. The nine volunteers were shot a total of 31 times, according to the documents. No chance of Palestinian state by 2012 : Israeli FM
OCCUPIED-AL-QUDS/RAMALLAH: Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Tuesday told his Russian counterpart that he saw no chance of meeting international aspirations for Palestinian statehood within 18 months.
I do not see any chance of a Palestinian state arising by 2012, Lieberman said at a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The reality is that we are still far from reaching understandings and agreements on the founding of an independent Palestinian state by 2012. The Middle East Quartet (Russia, the United States, the United Nations and the European Union) in March had called for an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement within 24 months leading to a two-state solution.
Lieberman said he had spoken with Lavrov about US-brokered indirect peace talks launched in May following months of shuttle diplomacy by US Middle East envoy George Mitchell, who returned to the region on Tuesday.
Lavrov said that the lack of progress in Israeli-Palestinian peace talks was liable to encourage radicalisation among Palestinians and said he hoped the indirect talks would soon lead to direct negotiations.
Alone among the Quartet members, Russia openly holds political contacts with the Islamist Hamas movement ruling the Gaza Strip, which is blacklisted as a terrorist group by Israel, the United States and the European Union. Lavrov spoke after meeting with the Western-backed Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas as part of an official visit to the region that included an earlier meeting with Israels foreign minister. The Israeli defence ministry and military would not immediately comment on the remarks.
