Six of a family attempt suicide in Karachi
KARACHI: A woman tried to commit suicide with her four teenage daughters and a six-year-old son in Safoora Goth on Thursday by consuming sleeping pills due to domestic problems.
Although all six members of the family survived due to timely treatment, the incident came as a grim reminder of Wednesday’s episode in Lahore where a rickshaw driver committed suicide after allegedly poisoning his three little daughters and wife in Shahpur Kanjran locality of Chuhng. Only the 40-year-old man’s wife survived the suicide attempt.
“The woman named Samina with his four daughters and a son was taken to a nearby hospital by the neighbors from where we got the call,” said an official at the Sachal police station. “We found them unconscious but gradually turning better after the first aid. They are residents of flat 308 in Ghazyani Arcade near Safoora Chowrangi in Scheme 33.”
After initial treatment at the private hospital, the family was moved to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where they were termed stable and shifted to the wards. The officials said that excessive consumption of sleeping pills by each member of the family led to such state.
“The way they consumed that is not clear but we came to know through doctors each of them had excessive sleeping pills and fell unconscious. Right now they all are stable and being observed by the doctors,” said the spokesman for the Sindh health minister, Dr, Sagheer Ahmed.
The neighbors of the family said that they were only aware about the strained relations of Samina with her husband, Wasim Najam.
“He (Wasim) is a real estate agent by profession and lately has tied a knot with another woman,” said M Akram, a neighbor, who accompanied the family to both the hospital. “We are trying to locate him but have been able to contact him. The neighbors are much aware of their domestic problem but there might be some financial crisis, which forced them to such extreme step.”
