Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan has been ordered to submit a reply to the defamation suit filed against him by Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) MPA Bakht Baidar Khan by the next hearing scheduled for January 18.
District and Sessions Judge Shaibar Khan issued the order on Tuesday when Syed Sikandar Hayat, Saadullah Marwat and Robina Naz appeared on behalf of Imran in court.
The lawyers presented a memo of appearance and said a power of attorney bearing Imran’s signature would be submitted in the next hearing on January 18.
They further said their client had received the court’s notice and a power of attorney would be presented in the next hearing because some time was needed to arrange all the necessary material.
Baidar’s counsel Babar Khan Yousafzai said Imran’s lawyers should be given a short period of time to submit proof of the allegations against Baidar, based on which his client was removed from the provincial cabinet.
“My client was removed from his post on baseless allegations and the step gave him a bad name in the eyes of all Pukhtuns,” contended Yousafzai.
Judge Shaibar Khan then ordered the accused to submit a rejoinder till the next hearing on January 18.
On November 13, Chief Minister Pervez Khattak fired two QWP ministers from the cabinet on the directives of PTI Chairman Imran Khan. Environment minister Malik Ibrar Hussain and Industries minister Baidar were subsequently relieved of their duties.
On December 8, Baidar filed a defamation suit of Rs1 billion against the PTI chairman for removing him from the cabinet without any proof of the alleged corruption. On December 10, the court directed Imran to appear at the hearing on January 7.
The defamation suit filed by Baidar under Section 9 of the Defamation Ordinance 2002 reads, “The blended allegations levelled by the defendant (Imran) against the plaintiff (Baidar) are highly mischievous and further from the truth. It has been, and is made, to harm the reputation of the plaintiff in the eyes of the public at large, and in the eyes of his party, colleagues, peers and family in particular.”
