Canadian citizens will require Visa to Enter UAE from Jan 02/2011 / Canadians to pay upto 1,000 doll

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - Canadian citizens will now need visas to enter the United Arab Emirates, a UAE official said on Tuesday, after recent tensions over landing rights and military operations in the oil-exporting country.

Canada was one of more than 30 countries, mostly Western, that benefited from a visa waiver the UAE offered to their citizens, but Canadians entering any of the seven emirates from January 2, must now obtain a visa in advance.
The decision is the latest development in a diplomatic standoff between the two countries over landing rights for UAE airlines flying to Canada, which triggered a UAE government decision to end access to a military base used by the Canadian military to support troops in Afghanistan.

The official source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the waiver is offered to countries with which the UAE "enjoys a special relationship built on growing economic cooperation and other forms of coordination."
Dubai carrier Emirates had been lobbying the Canadian government to boost its thrice-weekly direct flights to Toronto and more Canadian destinations, with support from the UAE government, but failed to gain greater access. Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways also wants to increase its flights.

Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed Tuesday that as of January 2, 2011 visas will be required to travel to UAE for business or tourism.
UAE citizens are already required to have visas to enter Canada.

"All sovereign states have the right to decide the entry requirements for visitors to their countries," the department said in an emailed statement.

Last month, the UAE blocked Canada's access to an airbase near Dubai that the country had been using for support and rest for its troops in Afghanistan.

Visa in advance would be a problem,I am not sure if there is any possibility of a visa on arrival against a payment of certain amount of fee.If you are travelling on Emirates or Ittehad, they will arrange your visas.

Re: For Canadian citizens: You will need Visa to Enter UAE from now on!

If they ask for more money or visa for stop over, I am sure they will not survive (Ethiad or Emirates). They may have to close this route

They were very successfull becoz they were offering very good price and serivces so Canadians (specially Asian origin) were very happy to fly on one of this airline however if they ask for visa or more money they it will be difficult for Canadian to fly on this

Lets see how they resolve this

It will be very good for Canadian people to have more flight from UAE based with cheaper rate. I fly couple time under 1200 dollar. This is such a good price that I can fly twice a years or as much as I want, sometime they offer 700 dollar for return. I mean, if you fly only UK it will cost you more of less this price, more than 1000 dollar.

As per new regulations, you need to have your Visa paper in advance, nothing on arrival upon payment, this is the facility which U.A.E Government they have abolished for Canadians. however if you will be travelling on Emirates or Etihad, you can request them to arrange visa in advance upon payment, if you will be travelling on different career, then you have to find a sponsor, who would arrange visa for you and submit to immigration upon your arrival, plus they have to submit a visa copy to concerned airlines, which will feed visa availability in their system, you have to keep that visa on arrival message or visa copy handy, as immigration or airline official could ask the evidence in this regard.

UAE basically revoked landing right for Canadians and this is their retaliation.

Who's going to lose? Obviously UAE. I know many people here who go to dubai every year for holidays. They can still go but not everyone want to go through a hassle

That's true.So many times on way to Pakistan via Dubai( By Emirates) we stayed in Dubai for a day or two.It was good for their tourism.I believe there are very few countries in the world where Canadians require an entrance visa( now UAE is one of them)

I think all Canadian should boycott UAE as well because these guys have absolutely no idea of what they are doing. They related a totally different issue with the visa upon arrival facility for Canadians. Which I personally think is not only unfair but also bit too harsh for their own tourism business.

I have never flown on Etihad or Emirates because I know these companies (almost all middle eastern companies) have made their business successful on the blood of poor labors who work like an animal with minimum wages and no rights. These poor labors are not from other planet, they are mostly from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Philippines who are trapped in these countries and forced to live below human standards. How can we enjoy our comfort on blood of our own brothers? I rather pay little more money and fly with another carrier.

I am not saying all this because I am a Canadian or because someone told me horrible stories about living in Middle East. I moved from Canada to UAE with the thought of providing a better Islamic living & culture to my family but moved back within a year after watching what's happening there. There is no existence of Islam in UAE, I think they don't even consider their country an Islamic country. They are actually worst then west because in west at least you know what is happening at which place but in Dubai you don’t even know what's going on in next door.

I am sure whoever have lived in Middle East (Dubai for sure) will agree to my following observation:

1) Liquor: openly available in any hotel

2) Gambling: Atlantis at The Palm Dubai

3) Pork: Can be easily find at Spinny's

4) Prostitution: Openly available & its a great revenue generated trade.

5) Racism: You get treatment on base of your nationality.

6) Human Rights: You are not allowed to argue with a Local, it is Illegal. you can't say anything bad about royal family. While here in North America you have "freedom of speech".

7) Employee Rights: By working at 500DHS a month (6 to 7 days @ 12 hours/day) , your passport with employer, not allowed to change the job, not allowed to leave the country. you can just dream about Employee Rights here.

These are only few things, I can right 100's of more observations by me. I decided never to return back to that region (unless for Ummrah or Hajj) again because here in North America it's easier to teach your kids Islam then to UAE.
This is I think Canada & Canadian should boycott UAE products & stop giving them your business. Remember every drop counts so don't think you can't make a difference.

Canadians to pay upto 1,000 dollars for UAE visas

The United Arab Emirates embassy in Canada announced it will charge Canadians upto 1,000 dollars for visas; the embassy posted the new rates on its website.

dubai_29122010.jpg

According to the website, the travel agencies and hotels in the UAE will be able to issue both tourist and visit visas.
A multiple entry visit visa which will be valid for 6 months with a maximum stay of 14 days for each visit will be valid for six months and would cost 1,000 dollars.
The long term visit visa which will be valid for three months would cost 500 dollars and the short term visit visa would cost 250 dollars and will be valid for 30 days.
The fees come into effect from January 2; about three months after the UAE announced that Canadians would now be required to get visas.
Previously, Canadians, like travellers from the US and 30 other countries, didn’t have to apply for a visa and simply had their passports stamped on arrival.

These visa charges are too costly.Do they want to encourage or discourage Tourism ?? There are hundreds of tourist spots available to Canadians at a fraction of the cost compared to Dubai.

Canadian visitors to pay up to $1,000 for UAE visa

Canadian visitors to pay up to $1,000 for UAE visa

97880839.jpg

The UAE will require Canadian visitors to buy a visa for the first time to enter the country, paying as much as C$1000 ($1000) when applying from January 2.
Canadians must apply for a visa 15 days prior to departure, reversing the current regulation allowing them to enter the oil- rich country without a prior visa and at no cost.
The move is the latest in a dispute over landing rights between the two countries.
A short-term 30-day visa will cost C$250 and a three-month visa will cost C$500, the UAE. Embassy in Ottawa said on its website.

multiple-entry visa will cost C$1000 and is valid for six months for a maximum stay of 14-days per visit.
The UAE embassy announced in November it will require Canadians to apply for visas after an aviation dispute between the two countries over landing rights for commercial flights.
UAE carriers, including Emirates, have been seeking dozens of new landing slots in Canada, contending that the six weekly flights currently allowed are not enough to meet demand. Transport Canada, the government agency that oversees the airline industry, and Air Canada opposed granting more slots on concerns that UAE carriers may eat into Air Canadas traffic to cities such as Frankfurt.

Canadians face pricey visa for UAE after diplomatic spat

Published On Tue Dec 28 2010
Mike Blanchfield The Canadian Press

OTTAWA — Canada’s diplomatic dispute with the United Arab Emirates will cost travellers to the Gulf state as much as $1,000 in new visa requirements.
The new fees kick in this weekend with the arrival of the new year, and were announced this fall at the height of a dispute between Canada and the UAE.
A 30-day, non-renewable visa will cost $250, a three-month visa $500, and a six-month multiple entry will be $1,000.
The UAE, particularly its city state of Dubai, is major travel hub linking Europe, Asia and Africa.
Camp Mirage military base, outside Dubai, was the key staging ground for the Canadian Forces mission in Afghanistan before the UAE issued an eviction notice.
It followed the Conservative government’s refusal to grant extra landing rights to two major UAE airlines.
The decision exposed divisions in Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s cabinet.
Transport Minister John Baird led the charge around the cabinet table to deny extra landing rights to Emirates and Etihad airlines.
The decision to deny greater access to the UAE airlines was based on the assumption that Canadian airlines would suffer, particularly if preferential access were given to Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.
That view was opposed by Defence Minister Peter MacKay, who was concerned the decision would negatively effect Canadian relations with one of its closest Arab allies.
MacKay has publicly stated that Canada has “work to do” in repairing its relations with the UAE.
The cost of moving the Forces’ supply mission from Camp Mirage has been pegged at $300 million.
A spokeswoman for Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon indicated Tuesday the looming visa requirement would not change the government’s decision.
“Canada is a sovereign nation, and we make our decisions based on what is in the best interests of Canadians,” said Melissa Lantsman.
The UAE’s ambassador to Canada could not be reached for comment.
Deputy Liberal Leader Ralph Goodale accused the Conservatives of botching relations with a strategically important partner in the Persian Gulf region.
“The cost of this is going right into the pocket books of individual Canadians and companies that make visits to and do business in the UAE,” Goodale said Tuesday.
“It’s obvious that stupidity and incompetence extracts a cost, and it’s a cost this is coming home to individual Canadians.”
The new rules will affect 25,000 Canadians living in the UAE as well as the 200 Canadian companies operating in the country.
The UAE is Canada’s largest trading partner in the Middle East and North Africa with bilateral trade exceeding $1.5 billion, and with Canadian exports accounting for 95 per cent, according to the UAE.
Before the new visa, Canadians arriving in the UAE — widely considered to be the major airline hub in the Persian Gulf and Middle East — were given a rubber-stamped 30-day entry permit on arrival.
Canada was among 30 countries whose citizens did not require a visa to the UAE.
The new requirements allow for a 96-hour transit visa to be issued for travellers just passing through.
Emirates and Etihad airlines will offer an on-line visa application.
But people not travelling on those airlines or not staying in hotels will have to be sponsored by a family member, friend or business contact in country, who will then have to apply to the UAE’s foreign ministry for the visa.
“Once visa approval is obtained, the sponsor will be required to transmit a copy of the visa by email or fax to the Canadian traveller, who will pick up their original visa on arrival in the UAE,” says Canada’s Foreign Affairs website.
Diplomatic passport holders will also have to apply for a visa in advance.
Recently, the UAE ambassador to Canada Mohamed Abdulla Al Ghafli said he was disappointed over the failure to secure extra landing rights for his country’s airlines.
“Six flights per week does not service the economic needs of both countries or the potential for growth,” the envoy said in a recent statement.(www.torontostar.com)
