'Brain elixir': Reading Urdu prevents dementia, says report

Reading an Urdu couplet plays a significant role in brain development and prevents the onset of dementia, a recent study has suggested.
Not only a beautiful language, Urdu is also an elixir for our brains, as per a study by the Center for Bio-Medical Researches (CBMR) in Lucknow, according to the Times of India.

The study shows reading Urdu involves predominant involvement of the frontal brain, which controls a number of cognitive functions such as decision making, the ability to determine good from bad, emotional control, coping with stress, processing information and analysing. It may also help children with learning disabilities.
The study has also been incorporated in the recent edition of international journal Neuroscience Letters.

Uttam Kumar, a faculty member, who conducted the research on subjects from Lucknow said the conclusion was drawn on the basis of mapping the brain of subjects when they read Urdu text for a stipulated time.
We used grapheme-phoneme mapping, which divides languages into transparent (easy to learn) or deep (difficult to learn). For example, Hindi and German are transparent while English and French are deep, he said.

Urdu is the deepest language and therefore reading it involves more areas of the brain, which is good for mental health, said Kumar adding.
Further, he said, Urdu has two more advantages over others visual complexity of letters and direction of writing.

Reading Urdu prevents dementia and instead grows "podinay ka baagh" in the brain

BTW the conclusion of this research sums up the reason for the downfall of the crackpot Mughal empire.

Such a sweet language and the politics made it a muslim language

Very rightly said. Unfortunately it is labelled as Muslim language whereas many of renowned Urdu poets and writers are Hindus like
Munshi Premchand, Brijnarayan Chakbast, Naresh Kumar Shaad,
Krishnachandra, Raghupati Sahaye Firaq, Kunwar Mahendra Singh Bedi, Ram Lal, and many more.

Yes, you have hit the nail on the head. Language has nothing to do with religion. Being labelled as a Muslim language, it is being neglected. That's very unfortunate. It's a pity that such a sweet language, which has played a key role in flourishing the Indian film industry, is being forgotten.

This is another feather in the cap of Urdu. Only a couple of years ago there was one article in a Kolkata daily reporting that " Everyone loves Urdu". Many of the best songs in India are in Urdu. I wish I could speak and read Urdu. When so much positive things are going for Urdu the government should encourage and facilitate the teaching of Urdu. After all it originated in India.

I fail to understand how you got this idea and from where? Probably you do not even know how Urdu language came to existence. Following is for your knowledge and information:
Word Urdu is combination of two words "Ur" means heart and "du" means two hence URDU is combination of two hearts. When Mogal emperors came to India and settled down here, they found it difficult to communicate with local people due to language barriers because local language was either Sanskrut or regional hence they wanted some intermediate language which both Indians and Mogals could read, write and speak. This was the reason why Urdu came to existence (combination of two hearts Bharti and Mogals. If you observe,Hindi and Urdu are more or less same in speaking except with the difference that Urdu has Persian and Arabic words whereas Hindi has both Arabic (Hazir,Halaat,Mauqa etc) and most of Sanskrut words. The only difference is that Urdu is written in Arabic Alphabets and Hindi is written in Sanskrut Alphabets. BASICALLY URDU IS PURELY AN INDIAN LANGUAGE WHICH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BREAKING UP OF PAKISTAN. Greatest Urdu poets and writers are Hindus like Nareshkumar Shaad , Brijnarayan Chakbast, Raghupatisahaye Firaq, Ram Lal, Premwar Birtani etc. Please come out of your nutshell my dear friend and learn Urdu and enjoy its sweetness.

I recall when I was in school, one of my classmates, a Hindu whose name was Pathak, used to bunk his Gujarati class and attend Urdu class with us. When his Gujarati teacher objected, he replied in Gujarati saying 'I can read, write and speak Gujarati and that's enough. I attend Urdu class because I love it'.
