A better way to deal with the issue will be to look into the accounting of the hospital. A court can order an audit into the financial statement and see how much money this place is making and then question their charity status. I think people SHOULD boycott AKUH , stop going there, stop getting admissions there, and choose alternatives , If their business model is to make money off people by ripping them off they would fail and will have to shut down.

The medical billing issue is a universal issue. Hospitals can't price your bill ahead of time. I am sure one can negotiate the bills. My father was admitted at a UK hospital during a brief visit and for two days of stay he was billed 20 K GBP. Those two days he stayed just waiting for a specialist to see him and nothing else. We were able to negotiate the price to 2 K GBP .

YOU are underestimating the cunningness of these thugs. They are like the ----- of Pakistan. Majority of the accounting firms are owned by Gujrati Khojas who are influenced on a communal basis. Like sugar industry mafia , they maintain double books...one to show and one for real. The so called President walks about as if he has diplomatic immunity. Very few people would know that the AKU is now owned distantly by HBL which in turn is indirectly by the Trust of the cult leader. They also own Serena Hotel which explains the extortionate billing methodology and the seven star executive suites.
It would be very very naive to think a mere accounting audit would show the facts.
This is not about jealousy of their success. It is more about the toxic effect of this hospital on health care costs in Pakistan. Being a market leader they rig the price bar, raise it and makes other charges slightly less because " AKU is charging so and so" The myth of their superior level is something which I can talk forever. I shall leave that for some other day.
Personally I wouldn't be surprised that money is transferred out of Pakistan in cash in diplomatic chartered private planes. Remember all the Aga Khanis pay a tenth in dasoondh to their cult leader. This money naturally finds it way out via non banking channels to avoid tax liability....
The land and charter was given for a specific purpose ) free charitable health care and medical edcation) . AKU has done everything illegal. The land ought to be confiscated back by the State. The city desperately needs a General Hospital where people get emergency and urgent care. Elective hip , knee, spine and brain surgeries do not qualify necessitating 'charity status' specially when people are paying 15000SD for a procedure which can easily be done within 1500 USD ( including cost of implants).
