On a serious note , I hail prime minister of Pakistan Imran Khan Niazi for giving proper attention to environmental issue aur also receiving well deserved accolades from inside and outside the country. To boost octane rating of petrol , petroleum refineries in pakistan are using MMT (Methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl). The issue first surfaced for a different reason in 2017 when Honda civic turbo in pakistan experience excessive amount of knocking in their engine.They got the petrol tested from independent labs and a dangerous upto 300 mg / litre MMT was discovered ( for reference around the world the reluctantly acceptable amount only 8 mg/litre). This manganese and its compounds has mutiple risks for human beings including damage to the brain and lung diseases.We remember very well that before that it was lead in the gasoline which was an issue.
The problem lies with the government policies and petroleum refineries in pakistan , instead of improving their refinement process to produce quality high octane fuel the refineries are taking the easy way out of adding MMT in the gasoline and causing excessive health risk to only humans but also to car engines and their emission system (catalytic converter and exhaust).Such fuel is also damaging the combustion chamber of the engine. The refineries are making billions but are not ready to upgrade their refinement processes.No amount of trees will be able to solve this problem unless government takes it serious .
