[h=1]Christians flee slum as scavenger girl is charged with blasphemy[/h]
LAHORE - A large number of poor Christian residents of the Mehrabad slum near Islamabad’s G-11 Sector have reportedly fled the area fearing religious violence after an 11-year-old scavenger girl was charged under the blasphemy law two days ago.

According to reports, Rimsha, daughter of Misrak Masih and suffering from Down Syndrome, has been charged with allegedly burning pages of a Noorani Qaida, a booklet used to learn the basics of Arabic and the Holy Quran.

A case No 303/12 under Section 295-B of the Pakistan Penal Code was registered against Rimsha at the Ramna Police Station on August 17 after a local man named Al-Syed Muhammad Ammad complained that he had seen the girl burning the Noorani Qaida along with other garbage.

Soon after the incident, residents of the area gathered to register their protest. They also blocked the Kashmir Highway and demanded immediate arrest of the 11-year-old.

Some of the protesters reportedly beat up Rimsha and her mother, while the rest of the girl’s family managed to escape. The police arrived at the scene and took the girl into custody. She has been sent to the Adiala Jail on judicial remand.

According to local sources, over 1,000 Christian residents of the slum have left the area fearing violence as some local religious groups are reportedly threatening to burn down the Christians’ homes.

A Christian rights activist, asking not to be named, told Pakistan Today on the phone from Islamabad that they visited Ramna Police Station on Saturday to seek information about the incident, but found the officials there “extremely hostile”.

“The duty officer asked us why we wanted to pursue the case,” the activist said. “The girl has desecrated the Holy Quran and has been rightly charged with the crime…you should leave lest the people come for you,” he quoted the duty officer as saying.

The activist said that Christian leaders, including Minister In-charge of National Harmony Dr Paul Bhatti were in contact with Muslim religious leaders to prevent any further violence in the area. Dr Bhatti’s phone went unanswered.

“A large number of Christians of the slum have sought refuge with their relatives in other areas of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and it could not be said when they would be able to return to their homes,” said the activist.

Officials at the Ramna Police Station told Pakistan Today that the 11-year-old “had admitted to her crime”. [BULLSHIT!!!!]

“Rimsha admitted that she set the holy pages on fire and a case was registered against her after that; due process of law was followed in the case,” said Muhammad Ahmed, the investigating officer of the case.

Section 295-B makes willful desecration of the Holy Quran, or use of an extract in a derogatory manner, punishable with life imprisonment.

Could it be qadyanis behind the whole issue.

if you are really THAT interested then by all means go ahead and search around and research for yourself. I am merely posting the news as I see it, and why would this incident even be of surprise to you??

A man was burned alive by a mob in Bahawalpur, a Christian school girl accused of "insulting Holy Prophet" after she mispelled Naat with ****** in an Islamiat test, and now this.

Again, does this even surprise you? Or are you the kind who say "Nope, Its a conspiracy to harm Pakistan and Islam" in a country where kids are told to blow themselves up to be Shaheed and get 70 hoors in Jannat???

Since the girl is a minor, she should not be punished severely but must receive a sentence so that she never again does this sinful act again. I would like to know what instigated her to do this offence and in which circumstances and should be reminded along with her parents and family that it carries death penalty if committed again.

and suffering from Downs Syndrome if you missed out on the details.

but then its okay to kill anyone for a book right? Killing someone, anyone, for ALLEGEDLY burning a Holy Book is ridiculous and stupid.

The way Jihadis attacked churches, temples, shrines, imam bargahs, and mosques, and how their attacks not only burned copies of the Bible, Quran, Gita etc and KILLED many innocent people,

yet NONE of them are ever tried in court or punished should be FAR MORE WORRYING for you, beta jee.

Islam teaches you basic common sense and aqal mandi, and clearly the mard-e-momins of this country lack both!

11 year old Pakistani girl (with Downs syndrome) accused of Qur'an burning could face death penalty! (Ab deen ko 11 sala zehni mareeza larki sy bhe khatra lahak hay?)

A-Christian-neighborhood--008.jpg

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/aug/19/pakistan-christian-tensions-quran-burning-allegations?cat=world&type=article

An 11-year-old Christian Pakistani girl could face the death penalty under the country's notorious blasphemy laws, after she was accused by her neighbours of deliberately burning sacred Islamic texts.

Rifta Masih was arrested on Thursday, after complaints against her prompted angry demonstrations. Asif Ali Zardari, the president, has ordered the interior ministry to investigate the case.

As communal tensions continued to rise, about 900 Christians living on the outskirts of Islamabad have been ordered to leave a neighbourhood where they have lived for almost two decades.

On Sunday, houses on the backstreets of Mehrabadi, an area 20 minutes' drive from western embassies and government ministries, were locked with padlocks, their occupants having fled to already overcrowded Christian slums in and around the capital.

One of the senior members of the dominant Muslim community told the Christians to remove all their belongings from their houses by 1 September. "I don't think anyone will dare go back after this," said one Christian, Arif Masih. "The area is not safe for us now."

A few brave souls have stayed behind, but shopkeepers have refused to serve their Christian neighbours or supply them with water. Locals say only about 10% of families in the area are Christian, renting cramped houses from Muslim landlords. They tend to do dirty, menial jobs such as sewer maintenance.

Relations between the communities had been simmering for months after complaints were made about the noise coming from three churches in the area during religious services. Two of the landlords who owned the buildings had already ordered an end to worship and some services were forcibly broken up.

But there was no indication that all the Christians would be forced out so suddenly until Rifta was accused of the provocative act of burning the sacred words of Islam.

It sparked immediate demonstrations by crowds estimated at between 600 and 1,000 people, some of whom blocked the nearby Kashmir highway, the major road running west out of the capital.

The police, initially unwilling to take action, eventually charged the girl with blasphemy and took her into custody. The rest of the community, including her parents, fled.

As with many other aspects of the incident, there is disagreement about exactly what was burned. Some say it was a small pocket book of Qur'anic verses. Others claim it was pages of the Qur'an. Either it was a relatively small quantity of ash carried in an earthenware dish, or it was around half a kilogram of refuse that filled a small plastic shopping bag.

Hammad Malik, a 23-year-old with a shaven head and bushy beard who is deemed a "scoundrel" by the Christian community, said he saw Rifta walking out of the tiny, single-room dwelling where she lived with her parents and sister at some time after 6pm. He said it was pure chance that he noticed her bundle.

"I looked at it but did not know exactly what it was but I could see it had words written in Arabic," he said.

He concedes that no one actually saw her burning anything as the offence allegedly happened inside the house, and she was caught while finding somewhere to throw away the remains. However, the local mullah claims there was a witness: another young girl who caught her in the act and then ran to the mosque to raise the alarm.

One thing the Muslim community does agree on is that claims in the local media, sourced to the police, that the girl has Down's syndrome are false.

"She is a completely normal girl," said Kamran Khan, cousin of the Masih family's landlord. As the largely male and grownup crowd gathered outside the house, a girl who said she knew Rifta said she did behave oddly she talked to herself and walked in a peculiar way.

The other point of general agreement is that "the law should be followed". Unfortunately, the law in question is Pakistan's blasphemy law, which has a proven track record of ensnaring people on the flimsiest of evidence and being cynically used to intimidate communities or settle quarrels over money and property.

Even though no one has yet been executed for blasphemy in Pakistan, long prison terms are common one Christian couple was sentenced to 25 years in 2010 after being accused of touching the Qur'an with unwashed hands.

There have also been cases of people killed by lynch mobs demanding instant punishment. Daring to criticise the law is incredibly risky and few do it.

In 2011, Salman Taseer, the former governor of Punjab province, was gunned down by his own bodyguard after he spoke out against the case of Aasia Bibi, another Christian woman accused of blasphemy.

The Christian community of Mehrabadi says the whole thing is a plot. They too have conflicting accounts of what happened. In one version, according to priest Boota Masih, a Muslim neighbour asked the girl to throw out the ash into which the desecrated pages had been placed.

Either way, one hotly contested incident involving a very young girl looks set to change the complexion of the neighbourhood for ever.

"They have done this to provoke the Muslims, like they have with their noisy banging and singing from their churches," said a local mullah, who would not give his name. "We are not upset the Christians have left and we will be pleased if they don't come back."

ISLAMABAD: The recent arrest of a Christian girl in the capital’s rural area on blasphemy charges has broken the silence of the ruling PPP which has been quiet on the issue over the past year since the assassination of two of its leaders, Salman Taseer and Shahbaz Bhatti, for suggesting some changes in the controversial blasphemy law.

President Asif Ali Zardari, who is also co-chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has taken “serious notice” of the incident and called for a report from the Ministry of Interior.

Dr Nafisa Shah, central coordinator of PPP’s human rights cell, also issued a statement expressing concern over the girl’s arrest and termed it “a glaring example” of misuse of the blasphemy law.

Presidency’s spokesman Senator Farhatullah Khan Babar quoted the president as saying that blasphemy by anyone could not be condoned but no one would be allowed to misuse blasphemy law for settling personal scores.

According to Mr Babar, the president called for a report within 24 hours, directed the authorities to protect the life and property of everyone and said no-one should be allowed to take the law in his own hands.

The president called for protecting everyone, particularly the vulnerable sections of society, from any misuse of the blasphemy law.

Nafisa Shah called upon the Islamabad administration to immediately take measures to solve the problem. She said the administration should have investigated the matter before detaining the 11-year-old girl.

“All political parties and religious leaders must come together to find a solution to this issue which is creating insecurity among the minorities,” she said, adding that “it is important to build consensus and recognise that there is a need to find ways to prevent such incidents where poor and disadvantaged communities are falsely charged.”

The PPP human rights cell proposed that in such an event, the law must allow leaders of religious communities and district administration to jointly inquire into the matter before registration of a complaint and arrest.

Last week, a Christian girl living in a rural area in G-8 sector of Islamabad was arrested and sent to jail allegedly for desecrating pages which had some religious text. Police said some local people had reported to have seen the girl “moving suspiciously” in the area, carrying a shopping bag, and later they found some burnt papers.

During interrogation, the girl was not able to answer any question properly, but police quoted her as saying that she was taking the papers to a “safe place”. Police said the girl’s mental state was not stable as she suffered from Down syndrome (a genetic disorder that causes mental retardation and severe learning disabilities in children). A medical examination of the girl was carried out.

Although the president has stated that no one would be allowed to misuse the blasphemy law for settling personal scores, there has been no mention in the official statement if the PPP, which earlier called for amending the controversial law, intends to move any legislation in parliament to curb such practices.

In the past, when religious forces in the country had openly announced that they would resist any move to change the law, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US and former PPP MNA Sherry Rehman had submitted a private member’s bill in November 2010 seeking an end to the death penalty envisaged in the blasphemy laws.

While moving the bill Ms Rehman had stated that she believed that the blasphemy laws as set out in the Pakistan Penal Code found their roots in colonial laws and had in their present form become a source of victimisation and persecution of the minorities in the country.

The most important change the bill proposed was the abolition of the mandatory death penalty and life sentence under Section 295-C, introduced by former military dictator Gen Ziaul Haq.

its not necessary that she gets the death penalty, there are people who have a mendat to be against this law, and use any such incident for publishing long articles and earn green backs, they have pre-written articles on such events, all they do is change the names and places and stamp it on to the papers. what happened to the 70 cameras that were shooting the Rafi Pir press conference against the US aid.

This case would be dismissed in due course of time as the child in question is minor and mentally compromised. But till then $50 M of Obama gona act as a snake charmer and make our media dance like a cobera, ya the Cobra that only use its venom while hunting for food,

What about the harassment and mental agony the whole community is going through and will go through all this while till the case is 'supposedly' dismissed as you claim?
What about the shame this incident is going to bring for Pakistan all over the world? This incident has been headline news in almost all countries worldwide!
Do you think remember the case of the girl who misspelled a few words in an essay and was accused of blasphemy? Her whole family had to relocate from Islamabad even after the case was dismissed!
How is all this okay?
