I commend you on your optimism but the fact is that in our country the more things change the more they stay the same.
Yes, some variables have changed this time around like the media and social media but the key constants are the same and strong as ever - the corrupt political elite and their desire to make more and more money and to go to any length to keep it safe for their generations to come.
I am not sure that what exactly is the source of optimism in our country. Yes, the corrupt elite has to be a little more careful and has to work a little extra to hide their ill gotten wealth but all the factors that are needed to hold them accountable and prevent any future corruption are basically missing in Pakistan. There is no rule of law and accountability. We still depend on personalities and institutions like the military to hold people accountable where we have seen that the military itself has been guilty of flaunting the laws of the land and some within the military are corrupt too.
As I said a lot of corruption has been going on in Pakistan and we have all seen it from the cop on the streets taking Rs. 100 bribes to the billions of rupees in kickbacks on big contracts or in the form of bank loan write-offs. We have become immune and have come to accept it and live with it. We are a very tolerant bunch when it comes to corruption. To be honest with it doesn't bother us much. Otherwise there would have been massive unrest because of these leaks and with the names of 200+ people on it. And this is just for one company - imagine how many more companies are there dealing with similar accounts.
What I think about all of this is that this too shall pass without much changing as a result.
