Today's sectarian divide between so called muslims is not like it was in time of the prophet. Let me try and explain the problem.
Companions of the prophet were given the quran and the rules to understand it were clear to them. So the quran made same sense to all who believed in it.
It was like having numbers and formulas to work out sums. They kept rules in forefront of their minds so any time they needed to do sums they did them the same way.
Today we have ignored formulas and are playing with numbers therefore we manipulate numbers the way we think or like.
Do we believe in laws of nature? No but the quran repeatedly talks in relation to these laws. Do we ever stop and think about it? No.
The quran talks about intellectuals, rational thinkers, logical minded people who live not in superstitious make beliefs dream world but real world.
The first diviation from the quran is belief in miracles like hindus and chrisitans and jews.
This was not belief of the prophet or his companions. They believed in law of cause and effect ie actions have reactions and form chain reactions.
Later books are mostly written by ignorant people who ignored the quran and thereby moved so called muslims away from the quran as foundation of islam.
It is because of this deviation that we lost proper understanding of the words used in the quran and took them totally in a different direction.
For example, word malak, jin, shaitan etc. We take them to mean supernatural creatures but the quran does not mean that and such a meaning cannot be justified from the quran because of laws of nature.
So it is clear that all sects have lost their way and are fighting over nonsense things.
These books that have been written to promote superstition instead of normal understanding of islam have done a great deal of harm to islam and muslims.
If anyone wants real islam, he must retrace his steps back to the quranic way of understanding it.
Otherwise this fight will not end because there is no rule that people could accept and unite. Just declaration of belief in te quran is not enough for eliminating sectarianism, people must believe in the quran the way the quran says.
So long as muslims believe in miracles and magic, malaaikia, jaan, shaitaan in supernatural sense they will remain ignorant of quranic teachings.
A prophet's miracle is the messages he is given by Allah and that is all. Allah never gave any other miracle to any prophet ever. If people continue to attribute lies to the quran and the prophet, they will continue to suffer and that is the promise of Allah.
It is easy to see from this who are real ulema and followers of islam and who are imperial mullahs and their followers.
All books written to promote superstition amongst muslims in the name of islam are originally written by enemies of islam to mislead muslims. Ignorant muslims have been following suit and promoting those books without realizing it.
Today islam is exactly what it is not. Islam is neither sunni nor shia, neither deobandi, nor brelvi. All these are worshipper of miracles and karammaat and their books are full of silly stories. Followers of these sects practice taweez, ghande etc because they believe in miracles and magic.
True islam is sticking to the real world not make beliefs. Inventing make belief problems and solution is never going to be good for muslim ummah.
No point in fighting over silly things and wasting time, it is better to find out what real islam is and follow it. Islam is still there in the quran as it was in the time of the prophet and his companions.
But learn to see the difference between sectarian islam and real islam so that mullahs are not able to manipulate you or mislead you in the name of allah and his messenger.
If anyone thinks one can know real islam without learning to be reasonable person then one can forget it.
May Allah guide us all to the right path and save us from manipulators in the name of islam.

Jazak Allah for an informative post about the work of Shaykh Muhammad Zakariyya Kandhlawi (RA). In fact, He had very balanced approach in the matters of Islam. Specially from his books, the chapters about "Fazail e Durood" and "Visiting Madina" are worth reading.
