Emperor Aurangzeb was a humble man but misunderstood

Emperor Aurangzeb is being portrayed as an orthodox and intolerant ruler of India by many Hindu writers, which is factually incorrect. A number of non-Muslims, including Hindus, Sikhs, Marathas and Jats, were employed by him in his court. Aurangzeb did not compromise on the fundamentals of Islam, which are in fact the moving spirit of every faith. Historical facts must be interpreted in their true and objective spirit and not subjectively as expressed by the Hindu writers. Aurangzeb even sanctioned grants for the restoration of Hindu temples. Aurangzeb is the person who has not been understood and interpreted in an objective manner and we need to study the historical facts with unbiased objectivity in nature and not subjectively. Aurangzeb was one of the greatest Mughal emperors and lived a very simple life. He lived on a small quantity of food; he use to write the Quran with his own hand and sell them to earn extra wage. If he wanted, he could have lived a life of extra-ordinary luxury as the, emperors, kings, nawabs, rajas, maharajas did in those days.

He should not even be accused of being communal minded and having a discriminatory mind. In his administration, the state policy was formulated by many Hindus and two of them held the highest position in the State Treasury. Some bigoted Muslims even questioned the merit of his decision to appoint non-Muslims to such high offices. The Emperor refuted that by stating that he had been following the dictates of the Shariah and Islamic jurisprudence, which demands appointing right persons in right positions. During Aurangzeb's long reign of fifty years, many Hindus, notably Jaswant Singh, Raja Rajrup, Kabir Singh, Arghanath Singh, Prem Dev Singh, Dilip Roy, and Rasik Lal Crory, held very high administrative positions. Two of the highest ranked generals in Aurangzeb's administration, Jaswant Singh and Jaya Singh, were Hindus. Other notable Hindu generals who commanded a garrison of two to five thousand soldiers were Raja Vim Singh of Udaypur, Indra Singh, Achalaji and Arjuji. One wonders if Aurangzeb was hostile to Hindus, why would he position all these Hindus to high positions of authority, especially in the military, who could have mutinied against him and removed him from his throne?

His father, Emperor Shah Jahan, was a blinkered Muslim and a confirmed nepotistic. He provided for the imperial princes before anyone else in the matter of administrative and judicial postings regardless of age, capability and talent and debauch Dara Shiko was his choice for the succession. Aurangzeb was without doubt the ablest of Shah Jahan's sons and a clear favourite for the throne. His credentials both in battle and administration were legendary. He was also an orthodox Muslim adhering to five pillars of Islam, which made him a favourite with the Muslim clergy. He tried during his lifetime to put down rebellions all over his empire (the Marathas, the Sikhs, the Satnamis and the Rajputs) and some of them conspired for the over throw of Mughal empire, not to mention the foreign powers that were already bribing rajas and maharajas: the British stretching their legs in Calcutta, the Portuguese in Goa and the French testing waters in the South. So, from the late-18th century the field was wide open for any new power that wanted to try to set up shop in India, thanks to the treachery of the maharajas.

Once established, he showed himself a firm and capable administrator who retained his grip of power until his death at the age of 88. True, he lacked the magnetism of his father and great-grandfather, but commanded an awe of his own. In private life he was simple and even austere, in sharp contrast to the rest of the great Mughals. He was an orthodox Sunni Muslim who thought himself a model Muslim ruler. It was because of him and his 49 years rule that the Muslims were able to hold on to their Islamic identity in India. The disease with the Hindu writers is that they suffer from leukaemia of subjective thinking; have propensity to mendacity; wear blinkers to reason objectively; present legless defence of their case but still gang together to mock in shameless fashion those who present subjectivity of their argument contradict or criticize obvious frivolities in their religious behaviour.

Most Hindus like Akbar over Aurangzeb for his multi-ethnic court where Hindus were favoured. Historian Shri Sharma states that while Emperor Akbar had fourteen Hindu Mansabdars (high officials) in his court, Aurangzeb actually had 148 Hindu high officials in his court (ref: Mughal Government). But this fact is somewhat less known and publicized for prejudiced his reputation.

Many Hindus wrongly and mendaciously accuse Aurangzeb of demolishing temples to make way for mosques but those are pure lies. If he wanted, there would not have been a single temple standing erect in India. On the contrary, Aurangzeb donated huge estates for use as Temple sites and support thereof in Benares, Kashmir and elsewhere. The official documentations for these land grants still exist. A stone inscription in the historic Balaji or Vishnu Temple, located north of Chitrakut Balaghat, still shows that it was commissioned by the Emperor himself. The proof of Aurangzeb's land grant for famous Hindu religious sites in Kasi, Varanasi can easily be verified from the deed records extant at those sites. Hinduvatas hate Aurangzeb for implementing Jizya - yet ignore the numerous other taxes he removed.

Destruction of Hindu Temples by Aurangzeb

Background
Islamic literary sources provide far more extensive evidence of temple destruction by the Muslim invaders of India in medieval times. They also cover a large area, from Sinkiang and Transoxiana in the North to Tamil Nadu in the South, and from Siestan province of present day Iran in the West to Assam in the East. This vast area, which was long the cradle of hindu culture, came to be littered with the ruins of temples and monasteries, belonging to all schools of Santana Dharma - Baudhha, Jaina, Shaiva, Sakta, Vaishnava, and the rest. Archeological explorations and excavations in modern times have proved unmistakably that most of the mosques, mazars, ziarats and dargahs which were built in this area, stood on the sites of and were made from the materials of deliberately demolished Hindu monuments.

Hundreds of medieval muslim historians who flourished in India and elsewhere in the world of Islam, have written detailed accounts of what their heroes did in various parts of the extensive Hindu homeland as they were invaded one after another. It is alear from the literary evidence collected alone that all Muslim rulers destroyed or desecrated Hindu temples whenever and whereever they could. Archeological evidence from various Muslim monuments, particularly mosques and dargahs, not only confirms the literary evidence but also adds the names of some Muslim rulers whom Muslim historians have failed to credit with this pious performance.

Some of the literary evidence of temple destruction during Aurangzeb's rule is listed below.

1. "Mir'at-i-Alam" by Bakhtawar Khan

"... The infidels demolished a mosque that was under construction and wounded the artisans. When the news reached Shah Yasin, he came to Banaras from Mandyawa and collecting the Muslim weavers, DEMOLISHED THE BIG TEMPLE. A Sayyid who was an artisan by profession agreed with one Abdul Rasul to build a mosque at Banaras and accordingly the foundation was laid. Near the place there was a temple and many houses belonging to it were in the occupation of the Rajputs. The infidels decided that the construction of a mosque in the locality was not proper and that it should be razed to the ground. At night the walls of the mosque were found demolished. next day the wall was rebuilt but it was again destroyed. This happened three or four times. At last the Sayyid his himself in the corner. With the advent of night the infidels came to achieve their nefarious purpose. When Abdul Rasul gave the alarm, the infidels began to fight and the Sayyid was wounded by the Rajputs. In the meantime, the Musalman residents of the neighborhood arrived at the spot and the infidels took to their heels. The wounded muslims were taken to Shah Yasin who determined to vindicate the cause of Islam. When he came to the mosque, people collected from the neighborhood. the civil officers were outwardly inclined to side with the saint, but in reality they were afraid of the Royal displeasure on the account of the Raja, who was a courtier of the Emperor and had built the temple (near which the mosque was under construction). Shah Yasin, however, took up the sword and started for Jihad. The civil officers sent him a message that such a grave step should not be taken without the Emperor's permission. Shah Yasin, paying no heed, sallied forth till he reached Bazar Chau Khamba through a fusillade of stones ...... THE DOORS (OF TEMPLES) WERE FORCED OPEN AND THE IDOLS THROWN DOWN. THE WEAVERS AND OTHER MUSALMANS DEMOLISHED ABOUT 500 TEMPLES. They desired to destroy the temple of Beni Madho, but as lanes were barricaded, they desisted from going further...."

The hatchet-men of the Govt. in the course of my marching do not get sufficient strength and power (i.e. time) TO DESTROY AND RAZE THE TEMPLES OF THE INFIDELS that meet the eye on the way. Therefore, you are commanded with extreme urgency that immediately on the receipt of this letter YOU SHOULD DESTROY THE ABOVE MENTIONED TEMPLES. EVERY IDOL-HOUSE BUILT DURING THE LAST 10 or 12 YEARS, WHETHER WITH BRICK OR CLAY, SHOULD BE DEMOLISHED WITHOUT DELAY. " ... When the imperial army was encamping at Mathura, a holy city of the Hindus, the state of affairs with regard to temples of Mathura was brought to the notice of His Majesty. Some of the Hindu historians have accused Aurangzeb of demolishing Hindu Temples. How factual is this accusation against a man, who has been known to be a saintly man, a strict adherent of Islam? The Qur'an prohibits any Muslim to impose his will on a non-Muslim by stating that "There is no compulsion in religion." (surah al-Baqarah 2:256). The surah al-Kafirun clearly states: "To you is your religion and to me is mine." It would be totally unbecoming of a learned scholar of Islam of his caliber, as Aurangzeb was known to be, to do things that are contrary to the dictates of the Qur'an.

Interestingly, the 1946 edition of the history textbook Etihash Parichaya (Introduction to History) used in Bengal for the 5th and 6th graders states: "If Aurangzeb had the intention of demolishing temples to make way for mosques, there would not have been a single temple standing erect in India. On the contrary, Aurangzeb donated huge estates for use as Temple sites and support thereof in Benares, Kashmir and elsewhere. The official documentations for these land grants are still extant."

The same textbook reads: "During the fifty year reign of Aurangzeb, not a single Hindu was forced to embrace Islam. He did not interfere with any Hindu religious activities." (p. 138) Alexander Hamilton, a British historian, toured India towards the end of Aurangzeb's fifty year reign and observed that every one was free to serve and worship God in his own way.

What these docoits from central Asia did to people of the subcontinent is well documented. Not by us but by themselves. In their personal diary. The original copies can be found on library. I will try to post any online copies found on internet. Most of them were criminals, thugs and genocidal menaics. They killed us in the name of their god. There were some better ones too. Its part of our history, we can only learn from them. Muslims of today had nothing to do with them. It is not the question if Aurangzeb is good or bad. Question is was he like Stalin or Hitler?
I highly doubt that he paid for any temple construction. He might have become more moderate towards the end of his life but i highly doubt it. Even though he destroyed 1000's of temples his tomb still stands there in Mumbai. However i shall find a good book on him and read about him.

Destruction of Hindu Temples by Aurangzeb
By Rajiv Varma

Please do not copy and paste an entire website on this page as it consumes hell of a lot of megabites. It would be advisable if you recommend the readers to access the relevant website.

it should not be forgotten that the Hindu kingdoms rebelled against the Mughal rule and were supported by the French and the British, who used them to tighten their grip on the sub-continent and enslave it. The establishment of a Hindu Marathi Empire in southern India cut off the Mughal state to the south. The great Mughal city of Calcutta came under the control of the East India company in 1696, and in the decades that followed Europeans backed by Hindu royals conquered most of the Mughal territory. Hindus preferred to become the slaves of the Europeans than ruled by the Muslims and when the British Raj ceased, the Hindus took their revenge on the Muslims of the sub-continent for their over 1200 year rule of India.

With regard to the alleged destruction of temples that the Muslim invaders demolished, it should be mentioned here that most of these housed licentious, voluptuous and nude statues of deities copulating and displaying sexual organs, and whole sets of Kama Sutra erotica in action on public walls. It is beyond the realm of human thought and morality that a place of worship should display pornographic materials and open air sex by religious deities. Even in the modern immoral and debauch societies of the West, this kind of vulgarity is not allowed on public places.

Could you tell me which specific temple had deities copulating, after all he destroyed 100's of them. You must know very few temples have deities copulating. What about the rest and what about the thousands he killed and inslaved.may be they had a bad hair style. Should i post some more heinous activities these animals did in india. You are trying to justify un justifiable. I don't know if i had a choice of chosing british salvery or muslim slavery i think i will go with british one. Muslim slavery is similar to facism and british slavery is stalinism.

you are crazy. You spend so much time and effort on doing research just so you can post here?? I am sure you spend countless number of hours on this.

You have these syndromes: ' Look How much I know', 'see? I gotch ya now', 'I win!!!'

you shoud spend time with family/friends instead of wasting time on this. do some puja and other your religious acts.

Now go to your room and watch some TV.......
