At one time, the mornings of Pakistan meant birds singing songs, cool breeze and sun rising with new hope and desires for the day ahead. Yet now, the meaning of mornings has totally changed and all the credit goes to our amazing morning shows. After every passing day, we get to see a new morning show with the same old concept.
It’s shocking that a large number of the audience which majorly include the housewives religiously watch these pathetic morning shows which propagate a wrong image of our beautiful culture. Despite addressing the major issues faced by our nation, the shows only discuss wedding arrangements or the singing and dancing which add spice to the show, since more space means more TRP.
Recently, Sanam Jung who hosts the show ‘Jago Pakistani Jago’, came up with something even weirder when she announced that they are conducting a Massi No 1 Competition over the course of three days after which the best Massi will be announced. The competition had 4 teams consisting of 2 members in each team. All the four teams had a celebrity employer which was the Baji and a Massi to help them with the household stuff. The participants were Sadia Imam and her massi Nusrat; Saima Azhar and her massi Irum; Javeria Saud and her massi Fiza and in the last, Fiza Ali with her massi Sumbreen.
Sanam Jung and the other four celebrities did try their level best to, again and again, reinforce the message that Massi’s should be treated with dignity and respect but it all got to waste when they started doing some inappropriate stuff including:
1. The Baji vs Massi
At times, the show fell back to the mode of treating the household badly, like highlighting the Massi’s flaws and the cooking competition judges, Akif Ilyas and Naheed continuously pointed out that maids should be clean when handling food. Furthermore, repeatedly saying “Apki massi” was not the right thing.
2. Commenting that domestic staff is not permitted to get basic rights
When Saima Azhar mentioned that she sends a Careem to pick her maids up when she gets sick, to which Sanam Jung replied, “Oh wow, an air-conditioned car is sent to pick you up! You’ve really spoiled her.” After which Saima Azhar said “No, we all should take care of them” and then Sanam Jung said, “You have to take care of them; otherwise, they run away.”
3- The massi dance
A group of girls performed the dance number along with the use of mops, wipes, and brooms as props which highlighted as to how much more inappropriate it’s getting.
4- Dressing the household as brides
In the second segment, the Baji’s were to dress up their house maids as brides. It involved expensive makeup, heavy clothes and lots and lots of jewelry to make them look like brides. It all somehow promoted the idea that you can only look good when you have a lot of money to spend.
5- Forgetting the household’s names
All the household staff mentioned their names in the beginning of the show but all the celebrities kept referring to them as “Massi” or “Naukarani”
It’s shameful as to where are we taking our nation. No one can deny the mistreatment of the household staff including the crimes such as child labor which are very common. But they aren’t discussed. Share this article, like it and don’t forget to comment down below as to whats your take on this.
