Learn from Osama’s fate, Karzai tells Taliban
KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Monday that Osama Bin Laden had “paid for his actions” after he was killed in an operation by US Special Forces in Pakistan. “The American forces yesterday killed Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad, close to Islamabad, and made him pay for his deeds,” Karzai told a gathering of tribal elders at his palace. The Afghan president called on Taliban guerrillas to learn a lesson from the death of Osama bin Laden and stop fighting against his US-backed administration.

Bin Laden’s daughter confirms father shot dead
ABBOTTABAD: Senior Pakistani security officials on Tuesday said Osama bin Laden’s daughter had confirmed her father was captured alive and shot dead by the US Special Forces during the first few minutes of the midnight operation carried out at the huge compound in Bilal Town, Abbottabad.
Besides recovering four bullet-riddled bodies from the compound, Pakistani security agencies also arrested two women and six children, aged between 2 and 12 years, after American forces flew towards Afghanistan. Some reports suggest 16 people, including women and children, were arrested from the house, most of them Arab nationals.
Another interesting aspect, which the residents shared about the house and its inmates, was the strict behavior of the family who in the past six years had never allowed women of the neighbourhood to enter their house or permitted their own ladies to visit neighbours. Also, children playing in the streets and nearby fields were never allowed into the compound, not even when their balls inadvertently went across.
“Usually, when their ball falls past the wall of a house, the children just go there and pick it up but they were never allowed into this particular house. Whenever their ball fell there and the children went to retrieve it, whoever opened the door gave them money to buy a new ball instead of allowing them to enter and search for their ball,” said an elder of the area, Mohammad Fayaz.
He said all these details made him suspicious but were not enough to make him believe the world’s most wanted man was hiding in his neighbourhood.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf insists Osama bin Laden is hiding in Afghanistan, but in his new book he reveals the terror kingpin moved his family to Pakistan after 9/11.
Musharraf last week told the London Times that he believes bin Laden is alive and hiding in the eastern Afghan province of Konar, possibly with the help of an Afghan warlord.
However, on page 240 of Musharraf's memoir, "In the Line of Fire," he says he learned from interrogations of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed that he and bin Laden prepared for "the transfer of their families to Pakistan" after the attacks.

It's only nine days into the new year, and already Musharraf is ignoring our humble advice: Find Osama. Musharraf needs a miracle to hold onto his tenuous grip on power, and there's nothing quite like delivering the most wanted man in the world to the United States' doorstep to rewrite your political fortunes, at least in Washington's eyes.
So, why is Musharraf going around saying that Pakistan is "not particularly looking for" al Qaeda's leader? In an interview with 60 Minutes, he was quick to assert that Pakistan is "operating against terrorists and al Qaeda and militant Taliban," but then claimed that he "can't say for sure" whether extremists have grown stronger in the border regions, despite squarely blaming extremists in those very border regions for assassinating Benazir Bhutto, whom he essentially blamed for her own death. This is the United States' best hope for an ally?

Pak troops not hunting for Osama: Musharraf

LONDON: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said his troops were really not hunting for al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden but more focussed on battling the Taliban and dimissed as 'pinpricks' the rising militant attacks in his country.
"The 100,000 troops that we are using to fight terrorists... are not going around trying to locate Osama bin Laden and Zawahri, frankly," Musharraf told a conference at the French Institute for International Relations in Paris on Tuesday.
That Osama bin Laden and his top deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, are still at large "doesn't mean much," said Musharraf, who is in France on the second leg of his four-nation European tour. The two most wanted men are believed to be hiding somewhere in the Pakistan's tribal areas bordering Afghanistan.
"They (the troops) are operating against terrorists, and in the process, if we get them, we will deal with them, certainly," Musharraf said in remarks suggesting it was more important to battle the Taliban and that the al-Qaida was less of a threat to his country.
Musharraf stressed that the remnants of the former Taliban regime of neighbouring Afghanistan are the 'more serious issue', for the US and Pakistan.
Rejecting suggestions that the violence in the border areas was a sign of a resurgent Taliban, he said "These are pinpricks that they keep doing and we have to manage all of that."
Musharraf also raised the Kashmir issue and said this along with Palestine have to be resolved to get rid of the option of war forever. "War is an expensive element and it is no mor eoption for any country," he said.

Laden alive and healthy: Pak intelligence

LAHORE: Pakistani intelligence circles have strongly refuted a French newspaper report claiming that al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden had died of typhoid in the country some time between August 23 and September 4 this year.
Based on the information gleaned from several arrested al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders, we can say with authority that Osama bin Laden, his deputy Ayman Al Zawahiri and the former Taliban chief Mullah Mohammad Omar are very much alive and in good health, said a senior intelligence official in Rawalpindi.
We are sure that bin Laden is hiding somewhere between Afghanistan and Pakistan, he said.We believe that his deputy sometimes moves back and forth between the two with the help of Mullah Omar and his associates.
The intelligence official said that even the American intelligence sleuths stationed in Pakistan are convinced that the al-Qaeda leader and his deputy are well and hiding somewhere on the Pak-Afghan border. And they are trying to hunt him down, the official said.
He said that had Osama been dead - especially, as recently as August - the news would have been broken by none other than the Pakistan president during his ongoing US visit. General Pervez Musharraf has everything to gain by making the news public. General Musharraf knows quite well how much the news of Osamas death would please President Bush at this stage, the official said.
Intelligence sources pointed out that bin Laden was last seen on a video on the Al Jazeera television channel on January 21, 2006. A recording from Osama, his first message for over a year, was aimed at quashing rumours of his death and warning the Western world that its most wanted man remained a major threat.
Three months later, on April 25, 2006, Osama resurfaced with an audio-taped address. There was nothing new in his message; the real objective was to indicate that he was alive, still the leader of al-Qaeda, and a main player in world politics.
Intelligence officials say that rumours about bin Laden suffering from kidney-related afflictions have been rampant for years. A persistent rumour suggests that bin Laden received treatment for his damaged kidneys at the American Hospital in Dubai in 2001, arriving on July 4 and leaving on July 14.
Among those with him, it is said, was Ayman Zawahiri, who as well as being his personal physician is al-Qaedas second-in-command. However, a few days before the 9/11 attacks, bin Laden himself, in a November 2001 interview with a Pakistani paper, denied reports that he had been hospitalised. My kidneys are all right, he had said.
As things stand, nobody is certain about bin Ladens whereabouts. Speculations, however, persist about his state of health, his plans for the future and his control over the supposedly defunct al-Qaeda.

LONDON: The US and Pakistan struck a secret deal almost a decade ago permitting a US operation against Osama bin Laden on Pakistani soil, British daily newspaper report quoted.
The deal was struck between the military leader General Pervez Musharraf and President George Bush after Bin Laden escaped US forces in the mountains of Tora Bora in late 2001, British newspaper reported quoting retired Pakistani and US officials.
Under its terms, Pakistan would allow US forces to conduct a unilateral raid inside Pakistan in search of Bin Laden, his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and the al Qaeda No3. Afterwards, both sides agreed, Pakistan would vociferously protest the incursion.
"There was an agreement between Bush and Musharraf that if we knew where Osama was, we were going to come and get him," said a former senior US official with knowledge of counterterrorism operations. "The Pakistanis would put up a hue and cry, but they wouldn't stop us."
