Breaking news on Dunya TV:

US official said on record that Pakistani concerns and accusation about Indian consulates role in Afghanistan are true.

India supports terrorisim and is involved in terrorist activities in Pakistan.

Pakistan's concerns over India's presence in Afghanistan are exaggerated but "not groundless", US Special Envoy James Dobbins has told the BBC.

Islamabad accuses Delhi of fomenting trouble on its western border through its consular presence in the Afghan cities of Kandahar and Jalalabad.

India denies the charge and says it is working on trade and development.

India has spent $2bn on development projects in Afghanistan and has strong diplomatic and trade ties with Kabul.

In an interview with the BBC, Mr Dobbins said the Indian presence in Afghan cities was minuscule and it was "perfectly reasonable" because of their economic and cultural ties.

'Somewhat exaggerated'
Mr Dobbins, US special envoy on Afghanistan and Pakistan, has recently returned from a trip to the region along with the Secretary of State John Kerry.

He said that Islamabad was also concerned about the issue of "cross-border militancy".

"The dominant infiltration of militants is from Pakistan into Afghanistan, but we recognise that there is some infiltration of hostile militants from the other direction as well. So Pakistan's concerns aren't groundless… They are simply, in our judgement, somewhat exaggerated," Mr Dobbins said.

In the past, US officials have expressed such sentiments in private, but this is the first time that a diplomat has said it openly.

Kabul has often blamed Pakistan-backed militants for violence in Afghanistan.

The US too has expressed its unhappiness over havens provided to these militants in Pakistan.

Mr Dobbins said the issue had been discussed at great length with Pakistan.

"We do remain concerned about the relative freedom with which Afghan insurgents can operate out of Pakistan," he said.

"We believe that Pakistan, Afghanistan and the US need to collaborate much more closely to deal with this threat of cross-border infiltration."

He said that Afghan President Hamid Karzai was "quite warm" to the idea of talking to the Taliban and had asked Pakistan to facilitate contact between the Afghan High Peace Council and the insurgents.

He said he hoped that the talks could begin within the next three months.

actually the article says the opposite. It says Pakistani concerns are exaggerated and Indias role in Afghanistan is "perfectly reasonable". While there is infiltration from Afghanistan into Pakistan, this is not attributed to India.

You didn't get it right i guess. It says India's presence in Afghanistan is "Perfectly reasonable" because of their Economic and cultural ties, but it doesn't give them the certificate to try to send people into Pakistan.

Secondly, it says that Pakistani concerns are exaggerated, but no groundless which means that Pakistan may say indian is sending 100 militants each month Or carrying 10 attacks each month, but in fact they may only send 30 to 40 militants each month and carry out 3 to 4 attacks. Exaggeration means to present something with higher figures.

Where does it says that India is sending people into Pakistan?

Allegations made by Pakistan are confirmed those allegation are addressed as "concerns" of Pakistan.

Islamabad accuses Delhi of fomenting trouble on its western border through its consular presence in the Afghan cities of Kandahar and Jalalabad.

The sentence means that Pakistan id concerned that india's consular presence in afghanistan is not for trade but also for promoting touble in the western border of Pakistan(promoting terrorism and helping them).

That is pakistan's concern, but that is not what he is saying.........he mentioned groundless in the sense that India's aid and development work there will reduce whatever influence and leverage pakistan had with afghanistan.....
he also said.......

In an interview with the BBC, Mr Dobbins said the Indian presence in Afghan cities was minuscule and it was "perfectly reasonable" because of their economic and cultural ties.

To the Statement: That Islamabad accuses Delhi of fomenting trouble on its western border through its consular presence in the Afghan cities of Kandahar and Jalalabad.. Mr Dobbins says its been exaggerated(by Pak as if india is the sole reason of trouble in Pak's western border) but are "Not Groundless". Means there is some truth that india is helping in making troubles in the western border but not to the extent Pakistan is accusing India.

The second part In an interview with the BBC, Mr Dobbins said the Indian presence in Afghan cities was minuscule and it was "perfectly reasonable" because of their economic and cultural ties. means that India's constructive presence in the cities(not the role for which Pakistan accuses it. i.e helping in trouble making in the western border) is important for Afghanistan(and India). Its like saying that India's presence in Afghanistan is important economically for both India and Afghanistan as they share the same economic and cultural ties. Now everyone would agree to this that if India is helping Afghanistan it is better for Afghanistan(and India) but if India is strengthening ties to get ground against Pak and to make trouble against Pak then its not a good thing for Pakistan.

read again, he was not replying to that statement.....that statment was not posed as a question to him, but it was mentioned as pakistani position and below that the Indian position in the report.......(click the link because the copy pasting done here is bit misleading).......his first statement was that the Indian presence is miniscule and perfectly reasonable......

now pakistan will lose the strategic depth (whatever that means (bigsmile)) if India gets more foothold in Afghanistan even if that is due to the aid and development..........and pakistan's only excuse is to accuse India of formenting trouble as it cannot complain about India's aid work there........now for the sake of argument if we assume what you are saying has some truth, even then take a closer look at the below mentioned statements......and see who is the bigger culprit........
He said that Islamabad was also concerned about the issue of "cross-border militancy".
"The dominant infiltration of militants is from Pakistan into Afghanistan,_ _ _ _ _ _
We do remain concerned about the relative freedom with which Afghan insurgents can operate out of Pakistan," he said.
We believe that Pakistan, Afghanistan and the US need to collaborate much more closely to deal with this threat of cross-border infiltration."
(notice he didn't mention India here while referring to cross border infiltration)
