ISLAMABAD: Contrary to the peace process gaining momentum in Afghanistan, the US has once again pressed Pakistan to move against militants in North Waziristan. However, sources say Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has responded with an emphatic no.


The demand to carry out an army operation against militants, especially those in North Waziristan, was renewed by US Ambassador Cameron Munter when he called on General Kayani on Wednesday. Director General (DG) Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Major General Athar Abbas, confirmed the meeting to Online.


Saying that he was not privy to the meeting, he declined to give any details of what they discussed. In response to a question, the top army spokesman told this agency that the ambassador had requested to meet the COAS.


According to media reports, the army chief did not agree to the US demand to open a consulate in Balochistan. Well-placed sources, however, told Online that the issue was not discussed during the meeting since it was not in the purview of the army to decide on the matter.


When contacted US embassy spokesman Alberto Rodriguez said the meeting between General Kayani and Ambassador Munter was a private meeting and “we normally do not share details of private meetings with the media.


While defending the ambassador’s meeting with the top general as not being a deviation from diplomatic norms, he said, “We have army to army cooperation”. As a strategic partner of Pakistan, the ambassador normally meets different members of society, he added.


Earlier sources told Online that the ambassador had conveyed a tough message of the Obama Administration to Pakistan’s military leadership that they would have to swallow another bitter pill of conducting an army operation against North Waziristan militants. “There are tough times ahead for you and more and more emerging indicators are not in your favour,” sources close to the ambassador quoted him as telling the army chief.


According to sources, the army chief told the US ambassador that the civilian government would decide on the issue of carrying out any fresh army operation within the territories of Pakistan. He told the American envoy that stopping drone attacks in the tribal areas would help accelerate the peace process on both sides of the border with Afghanistan. According to sources, Kayani reiterated Pakistan’s stance on drone attacks and said they were counterproductive to law enforcement against extremists.

Stupid American never respected Pakistani nation. CIA should be declared a terrorist organisation.

Pakistan needs to show US ambassadors now where their borders are and if they try to play proxy games within Pakistani borders then they should get lost from Pakistan. What ever the consequences are.

Recent visits of munter in Balochistan is a serious matter. During Musharraf's govt. Dick Cheney visited also Karachi MQM offices. Why these people are allow to leave their embassies??Do they know where their borders are?

Drone attack victims should be collected on one plateform and they should raise collected voice against US Mass murderer. They (US) should be accused in Hague tribunal against human killing in Pakistan. Obama should get punishment for his anti human policies to Pakistan.

Gen Kayani rejects US demand for NWA operation

US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter Wednesday called on the Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kiyani and exchanged views on the strained US-Pakistan relations, sources said.


Diplomatic sources told The Nation that the US envoy who met with General Kiyani on his request discussed the challenges both the countries are facing in improving the bilateral relations.


According the sources, the Army Chief ostensibly rejected the ambassadors demand for military action against militants in North Waziristan on the plea that any military action has to be decided by the government.

General Kiyani, the sources said, also took serious exception of the CIA operated drone strikes in Waziristan as it was counter productive and was promoting anti-US sentiments among the tribesmen.


Confirming the meeting the US Embassy spokesman said it was a private meeting and The embassy normally does not share private meetings details with media, adding that the Ambassador normally meets different members of the society while being strategic partner with Pakistan.


Monitoring desk adds: A private TV channel reported that Cameron lodged a complaint regarding Islamabads move of putting curbs on inter-city movement of US diplomats,.


Meanwhile, four officials of US Embassy in Islamabad were sent back to Islamabad when they tried to enter Peshawar City without holding NOC and incomplete documents.


On Wednesday morning, four US diplomats including Denis Wynne, Wilmer Case and Joseph Edward, attempted to enter Peshawar by two vehicles bearing numbers PB-491 and SV-406, however, police officials at Peshawar Motorway Toll Plaza stopped them and asked for their NOC.


Upon the inquiry of police officials, all the four US diplomats were sent back to Islamabad, as they did not hold the required documents for entering into Peshawar.
