This 'Human Uber' Service Lets You Go Places Using Someone Else's Body

Chameleonmask (as it is known) is "a telepresence system" that remotely projects one person's face onto a specially-made mask, which looks like a helmet with an iPad strapped to the front.

Unlike services like Facetime and Skype, however, the system uses "a real human as a surrogate for another remote user," according to their website.

"To do this, the surrogate wears a mask-shaped display that shows a remote user’s live face, and a voice channel transmits a remote user’s voice," the team explains.

The team also say it will help "eliminate many difficulties of teleoperated robots wandering in the environment" – because the future will be no doubt filled with thousands of robotic vagabonds.

"Our pilot study confirmed that people could regard the masked person as a right person," they write.

In a 30-second video, published on the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM) YouTube channel, you can see people testing out this new technological breakthrough. Japanese researcher Jun Rekimoto unveiled ChameleonMask at MIT Tech Review's EmTech event earlier this week, were people dubbed it the "Human Uber," VICE reports.
