The Sad Fate of Punjabi (Language) in Pakistan

my query... before Partition ... how was Punjabi language written?

That is because most people who speak it are from the rural illiterate section of society. Some accents of English spoken around the UK sound pretty brash and blunt.

Then there are several dialects of Punjabi in Pakistan which have softer tones. Yet they are considered even more 'paindoo' and parents try to keep their children from learning. The real problem is the associated 'paindooness' with Punjabi.

In Pastoon areas the Pastho spoken in the villages is different from the one spoken in cities yet its still Pashto. The parents dont discourage their children from speaking Pashto at home. infact almost all Pathans speak Pashto at home and their Urdu is very accentuated. They dont care. They own their language.

If a Punjabi speaks Urdu with a Punjabi accent he becomes the butt of jokes and is automatically considered an illiterate even if he is a Phd.

WE have to root out this notion that speaking Punjabi equates to being illiterate.

I Chose Punjabi As Subject Last Year As An Extra Subject. not a single old punjabi poet/author was given there to read in books. Not even bullaH shah. All Authors/poetS were Post-Partition Pakistanis. Isn't It Biased-ness?

Its not the case in pakistan only......you will find that in India too to some extent. I can say this because I have lived among punjabis all my childhood.....
Even if the elders used to speak in punjabi among themselves, they used to avoid it before their kids and talking in punjabi was a strict no no for them......
Now dialects are concerned they are there in almost all languages......I don't think its a question of literate or illiterate only, there has to be something inherently different in punjabi language which I as a non punjabi is not able to tell......bluntness is the only thing which comes to my mind........

It is endangered in the sense that it is not being taught in schools and in the modern age languages which are taken out of educational curriculum start to lose out. We see that for a long time no great poet or writer has come out and even if they have they are only known to a small section of die-hard enthusiasts of the language.
Teaching it in schools will encourage the future generation of kids to take up the language as a medium for expression in poetry and prose and will also stop the further relegation of the language to be classified a language of the illiterate and uncouth. We need to make the speakers of the language feel pride in using it in their everyday lives.

Enough with the Urdu and English aggrandizement at the cost of our mother tongue.

I see that punjabi people now a days use it amongst their gatherings, specially the upper class as a fashion to speak punjabi. Vese meri to mother tongue punjabi nahi hai but again, if people are worried, they should take concrete steps though teaching it in schools wouldn't help much.

he is right...I am born in a Punjabi family yet I have never spoken it...Many parents in my family don't teach their kids to speak in punjabi...

I understand all of it...just have trouble speaking it..

I don't see no 'sad-state' here, almost 56% of Pakistan speaks Punjabi while other groups can understand it, however it remain a 'boli' rather than a language as in Indian Punjab they have 'Gurmukhi' as standard writing which can also be written through it.

جو مادری زبان ہوتی ہے وہی ہر ایک کے لئے سب سے بہتر ہے لیکن جیسے کہ مادری زبانیں بہت زیادہ ہیں اور بہت چوٹی چھٹی علاقوں پر مبنی ہیں اس لئے یہ ناممکن ہے کہ ہر ایک مادری زبان کو اس قدر اہمیت دی جائے- ایک پاکستانی کی حسیت سے اگر بات کرنی ہے اور اس ملک کو سلامت دیکھنا ہے تو پاکستان کا قومی زبان اردو ہے پاکستان میں اردو کو ہی اہمیت دینی چاہئے خاص طور پر سرکاری زبان عدالت وغیرہ ساری محکموں میں اردو ہونی چاہئے
