If I were to be asked as to who was the real villain in East Pakistan breakup , I would say that from 1969 onwards there is a list , first it was Governor S.M.Ahsan who did nothing to stop the murders of jamaat Islami and Bhashani Workers preelections in the then East Pakistan at the hands of Mujib Goondas and there was some suspicion that CIA was supporting Mujib in this game.Second person at fault is Sahibzada yakub , who did not properly smell Bengali revolt of officers under his nose.
Third Villain was Bhutto who knew well what was happening and did nothing to help pacify the developing tensions pre March 1971. The fourth suspected villain was USA which wanted a Russia -China conflict over East Pakistan and did not help us at all.
The fifth was Jamaat Islami East Pakistan which tried to benefit from military action without trying to solve the conflict. The sixth was alcohol and woman culture of Pakistan army which was suppressed by Gen.Zia , but restarted by goofy Musharaf .
The seventh was distance between East and west Pakistan and lastly it was media which never projected the solution.
Mujib and indira were secondary actors given the suitable environment where to act.
The courage of a hardly 50000- 60000 actual armed west pakistani troops was phenomenal , fighting 1000 miles away and did not let India and Mukti Bahini make any territorial gains till a few weeks before fall of Dhaka.
Tikka and Niazi did their duty , offcourse we are not moguls trained for making empires and we do not recruit for "sure martyrdom" we do recruit for service , our mindset is different which makes us less efficient in war fare , we asked raheel to go as his tenure is finished even though he was creating goose flesh in TTP , could you ask that from Alexander or Suleman the magnificent. The army could have held on but where were the supplies and as Gen.Niazi said too many civilians were brought from West Pakistan , they would have been slaughtered in next weeks.
Gen.Niazi had sufficient forces to carry on for months but he was instructed not to let Mukti Bahini make any territory gain , which meant that forces had to spread thinly , then what was declared on 3rd December which led to indians openly bombing East Pakistan. Another error by Yahya was to send Bhutto to China , why would Bhutto help Yahya ?.
Going before time period of 1969, there was a fundamental defect in Ayub khan's approach to East Pakistan , East Pakistanis were more interested in their own provincial politics between 1947 and 1958 , they regarded filling PM and cabinet posts of Central government as a kind of bonus of benefit of union of two wings . They were happy . But In the name of corruption Ayub blocked their favourite provincial politics , their pastime , so they focused on central politics instead , here apart from speaker and governor there was no future for them , in 1969 , speaker was gone and governor was west pakistani .
This was a fundamental defect in break up of Pakistan. You no longer made bengalis PM , you were not allowing them to fight with each other in provincial politics either , so they ganged up upon you .
Your army was not trained for making empires and still is not . Your army runs from proper practise of islam especially in higher posts . You appoint from families as army chiefs people who are either from minority sect of Islam or are excluded from Islam altogether . Our army needs better training and mindset too.
There were some unsung heroes , the Rajakars from amongst Beharis , amongst Jamaat Islami cadre a few ones who fought and are being hanged today and neither Sartaj Aziz does anything , nor do Saudi FM stop encouraging Hasina Wajid and give her big welcomes .
After Breakup of Pakistan , when Bhutto formed government , then to save Pakistan , very senior politicians who actually made Pakistan , like Khan Qayuum entered as interior minister and Daultana who was also one of the founders of Pakistan took job as high commissioner in the UK . Below their seniority offcourse .
Bhutto five years later almost insulted Khan Qayuum . The national ID card scheme was introduced by Khan Qayuum and he handled out of control Wali khan and Baluch nationalists.
Best option for East Pakistan was to incite Bengali military officers in Pakistan army and promise them power in East Pakistan and use them to crush Mujib. Just as democracy has not been able to crush TTP and army did , Mujib was crushable only by his only military officers , when they off course did later.
We are told recently via kissinger that Yahya had promised USA that in March 1972 East Pakistan was to be given independence , this could have been some arrangement of Bengali military officers , which might have precipitated Indian invasion . Another thing which supports this approach is that Yahya sent his brother to Ayub khan as to what to do , Ayub replied , federation has not succeeded try confederation of states. some pages in book by hassan Zaheer who was senior civil servant and was there also support such idea but not of independence in March and confederation of states but it does describe all USA -Pakistan negotiation and close examination of those do lead to kissinger revelations as might be true.
