Teachers, students stage another protest against IJT activists in PU

Staff Report

LAHORE: Punjab University (PU) Department of Philosophys faculty members and students, on Friday, boycotted their classes and took out a protest rally against the hooliganism and misbehaviour of Islami Jamiat Talabas (IJT) activists.

The rally commenced from the Department of Philosophy and ended outside the Vice Chancellors (VC) office where the protesters staged a sit-in. The protesters were holding placards and banners against the hooliganism of IJT activists. They said that the IJT activists wanted PU to become a hub of extremism. They added that the Punjab government and concerned high-ups had failed to stop and take action against the illegal activities of the IJT activists. They demanded the provincial government to take notice of the torture of IJT on students, asking it to bring culprits to the book. PU VC Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran, on demand of the protesting students, assured them of strict action against those involved in illegal activities.

Talking to media on the occasion, he said that the IJT should realise that their days of eminence were over and the authorities had sealed all their offices at Hostel No 1, Hailey College and at other places. Some elements, which were recruited against merit in the varsity, are now backing and providing shelter to these IJT activists who are involved in car-theft and other criminal activities, the VC said. After the VCs assurance of stern action against IJT activists involved in torturing students and misbehaving with teachers, the protesters dispersed peacefully.

Later, a group of IJT activists approached the admin block raising unethical slogans against the teachers. They also beat the university guards when they tried to stop them from using abusive language against the teachers.
