Local TV found stamps from the roads of Badin dropped during transportation of polling material LAHORE (Local TV) – Major irregularities have been observed on Wednesday in many areas of Punjab and Sindh just one day before the local bodies election. Local TV found polling stamps from the roads of Badin, which were dropped during the transportation of polling material in rikshawa and motor bikes, reported Local TV. According to the details, one day before the local bodies’ election in many areas of Punjab and Sindh, mismanagement and haphazard preparations were observed. Polling material was being shifted on rikshaw and motor bikes.

Polling staff had to wait for hours before they could get the material. The stamps found on the roads of Badin raise many questions on the transparency and management of the elections. In Badin transporters went on strike against deduction of fares while polling staff also protested against low wages. Polling staff is also facing great difficulties after 22 polling stations were changed at the eleventh hour. The polling staff at Kotri and Thar Parker also protested against low wages for election duty and announced the boycott of polling as well. On the other hand in Gujranwala, 27 polling stations were changed just one day before the polling without any notice.

A summary had been sent to Chief Election Commissioner, which got approved on Wednesday, regarding the delay of elections in constituencies in which delimitation had become an issue. Supreme Court had earlier granted ECP the discretion to sort out delimitation.

The constituencies in which election will not be held tomorrow will have their elections after 3rd phase of local body polls. Local body polls in districts other than 14 specified districts will be held according to schedule. On the other hand, polling in Sanghar has been postponed due to security reasons. A total of over 20 million voters will exercise their right of franchise in the two provinces. Election Commission has finalised all necessary administrative and security measures to ensure free, fair and transparent polling process. FIRST PHASE RESULTS The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had won a majority of seats in Punjab whereas Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) grabbed most seats in the Sindh province in the first phase of local government elections. In the first phase, polling was held in 12 districts of Punjab including Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujrat, Chakwal, Bhakkar, Nankana Sahib, Kasur, Pakpattan, Okara, Lodhran, Vehari and Bahawalnagar districts while in Sindh, polling was held in eight districts including Sukkur, Khairpur, Ghotki, Larkana, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Kashmore and Qamber.

The two other provinces, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the northwest and Balochistan in the west, voted earlier this year. Khan won in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in May but Nawaz Sharif and his allies came out on top in Balochistan in January. Direct elections to local bodies in districts, which are sub-divisions of Pakistan’s provinces, were last held in 2005 under General Pervez Musharraf, who came to power in a bloodless coup.
