AL FATIHA=The proclamation
1) In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful,
2) The sovereignty belongs to Allah the creator and sustainer of the kingdoms of the universe,
3) The compassionate, the beneficent,
4) The Provider of clear reference point for mankind to judge their actions by.
5) So affirm that only to Your system of rule we commit and thereby we shall seek your provided sustenance,
6) Show us the way thereby to prosperity that is firmly founded,
7) The way of those whom you blessed with prosperity, of those whom you did not let suffer indignation by poverty of things because they went not astray.
If we read Surah al fatiha and try to see it as a divine proclamation or open official declaration of Allah, it clears a lot of confusion about the quran.
Allah starts by telling us who he is through his messenger, then tells us what he is providing us with and why. This is just in first 4 verses.
After that he wants us to affirm that we will live by his rule and seek guidance through the quran and follow the way of those who benefited from the divine guidance and not of those who did not bother with divine guidance and as a result ended up in suffering and remained therein unless they came to divine guidance.
So we have divine proclamation for mankind and then affirmation by mankind that they will do as told.
Mostly surah is taken as teaching us praying to god but if we look at it in its own proper context it is quite forceful divine declaration like a king sends his envoy who declares his decree to his subjects. Then the subjects are told to affirm that they accept his rule.
