President-elect Donald Trump has issued a statement countering Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharifs account of a telephone conversation between them, giving a bland, workman-like version in his first riposte to a foreign leader.
The reason, said a Trump adviser, was the flowery account of Sharifs customary phone call to the president-elect to congratulate him on his election that was released by Pakistani authorities on Wednesday. The Pakistani readout of the conversation seemed to have committed him to more than he meant, sources said, prompting the rare counter.
President-elect Trump and the Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Nawaz Sharif spoke today and had a productive conversation about how the United States and Pakistan will have a strong working relationship in the future, said the Trump transition team on Wednesday in a rare readout of the president-elects conversation with a foreign leader.
President-elect Trump also noted that he is looking forward to a lasting and strong personal relationship with Prime Minister Sharif, the statement added.

Trump offered to play any role Pakistan wanted him to resolve the conflict with India.
He had first offered to meditate if both countries asked him to in an interview to Hindustan Times in October, but was very mindful even then, days before he was elected as the 45th president, to stress that only if both sides asked him to.
The Trump transition team has only released readouts of the calls president-elect had received from Chinese president Xi Jinping and Russian president Vladimir Putin, but not to counter the account of the conversation put out by their countries.
Here is the Pakistani version of the conversation: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif called President-elect USA Donald Trump and felicitated him on his victory.
President Trump said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif you have a very good reputation. You are a terrific guy. You are doing amazing work which is visible in every way. I am looking forward to see you soon.
As I am talking to you Prime Minister, I feel I am talking to a person I have known for long. Your country is amazing with tremendous opportunities. Pakistanis are one of the most intelligent people.
I am ready and willing to play any role that you want me to play to address and find solutions to the outstanding problems. It will be an honor and I will personally do it. Feel free to call me any time even before 20th January that is before I assume my office.
On being invited to visit Pakistan by the Prime Minister, Mr Trump said that he would love to come to a fantastic country, fantastic place of fantastic people. Please convey to the Pakistani people that they are amazing and all Pakistanis I have known are exceptional people, said Mr. Donald Trump.
A Trump transition team official called this account of the conversation inappropriate, pointing to the bland undramatic account of the same conversation issued to speculate Sharif may have got on to a bad start with the president-elect.
