ISLAMABAD : Minister for Human Rights Syed Mumtaz Gilani on Tuesday said 113 suicide cases have been registered in Punjab, 56 in Sindh, 20 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan during the financial year 2009-2010 (till June 28).
He said this while responding a Calling Attention Notice moved by Ch Muhammad Barjees Tahir, Raja Muhammad Asad Khan, Sheikh Rohale Asghar, Khalida Mansoor and Muhammad Baligh-ur-Rehman regarding committing of suicides by the people due to unemployment, price-hike and poverty. The minister agreed that the root causes of suicide in our country include poverty, unemployment and price-hike, however it is not only the responsibility of government but everyone should play his role to overcome this issue. He maintained that keeping in view the financial situation of poor, government has already initiated Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and Waseela Haq Programme.
Mumtaz Gilani stressed upon the need for creating awareness among general public and said even Islam termed it un-Islamic and Haram. He said government is fulfilling its duty but it is also the responsibility of every member and every Pakistani to perform its responsibility so as to mitigate this social evil from our society. Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza also expressed concern over increasing trend of suicides and said it is the responsibility of members as well as media to create awareness in this regard. She also urged government to initiate such programes which could help overcoming the problems of poor masses. Earlier, Ch Muhammad Barjees Tahir, Sheikh Rohale Asghar and Khalida Mansoor termed suicide a menace for our society as people commit suicides when they loose hope and urged government to take serious action to overcome this problem.
