The mullah at the centre of the furore surrounding a young Pakistani Christian girl facing a death sentence for blasphemy has been accused of deliberately framing her by planting burnt Islamic texts.
In an extraordinary development in the case, which has attracted international condemnation, Hafiz Mohammed Khalid Chishti arrived in court blindfolded and under tight security after being arrested late on Saturday night. The judge ruled he should be held in police custody for two weeks.
Police say two of his colleagues gave statements that he added pages from the Qu'ran to strengthen the case against Rimsha Masih, who has been in custody for two weeks after she was accused by Muslim neighbours in her Islamabad neighbourhood of burning the holy book.
The crime is particularly serious under the country's much-criticised blasphemy laws and offenders can be sentenced to death.
Maulvi Zubair and two other assistants at a mosque near Rimsha's house told police Chishti deliberately added pages from the Qu'ran to some charred refuse she was carrying.
Zubair is said to have objected at the time but Chishti insisted it was the only way to get rid of Christians in the area.
Rimsha's lawyers maintain that she did not commit any crime. They say that not only is she only 13 years old, and should be tried as a juvenile, she also has Down's syndrome and therefore "cannot commit such a crime", according to her bail application.
Chishti has been outspoken about his dislike of the hundreds of Christian families who live in the area, even appearing on a popular national television show to complain that the noise made by Christian worshippers had disturbed Muslim residents.
He also welcomed the departure of most of the Christians from the area following the furore surrounding the arrest of Rimsha last month. With passions running high in the community – hundreds of people demonstrated outside her house, reportedly demanding the right to burn the young girl to death – most Christians fled the area.
"We are not upset the Christians have left and we will be pleased if they don't come back," Chishti told the Guardian on 18 August.
Tahir Naveed Chaudhry from the All Pakistan Minority Committee said Rimsha's lawyers had always maintained the evidence was planted. "And now it is proved that the whole story was only designed to dislocate the Christian people," he said.
"[Chishti] must be prosecuted under the blasphemy law as it will set a precedent against anyone else who tries to misuse that law."
The blasphemy laws have been widely abused as a powerful way to settle scores and disputes. People have been sentenced to long jail terms on extremely weak evidence, some of which cannot even be properly examined in court for fear of repeating any blasphemy.
But public criticism of the laws is itself dangerous – two prominent politicians have been assassinated by religious hardliners after speaking out.

Mumtaz Qadri, a former security guard who last year gunned down his boss, Salman Taseer, the governor of the Punjab at the time, is regarded by many Pakistanis as a hero for killing a man who had publicly criticised the blasphemy laws and backed a Christian woman who was sentenced to death.

I think he should be killed be under the same Blasphemy law.

I think a rule should be added to the blasphemy law; that if you falsely accuse someone for your own nefarious purpose, you should be tried and killed the same way.

You won't believe how many people, both muslims and non-muslims, have been killed because of planted evidence against this law, when in reality they just wanted the poor man's land, property etc.

I think a rule should be added to the blasphemy law; that if you falsely accuse someone for your own nefarious purpose, you should be tried and killed the same way.

You won't believe how many people, both muslims and non-muslims, have been killed because of planted evidence against this law, when in reality they just wanted the poor man's land, property etc.

In this case it is quite evident that the whole game was pre-planned. In his interview with Hamid Mir, the Mullah can clearly be seen saying how he told people to get ready as testing times are coming.

hmmm. it makes situation clear. Idea of Toheen Secred Persons Law has been taken from Hindus and other Non-Islamic countries. Otherwise there is no root for such a law in Quran and Sunnat. Only Ghareeb Hadiths are put up as defense by the Hindu origin Muslim Scholars

no so fast man. Our country is a strange society right now. You never know if the whistle blower against the Imam has been paid by the NGO's to witness against the Imam. It happens everyday.

We also know that Christian countries have done a lot of damage to us too, socially, financially, morally, mentally, psychologically. They are creating sympathies in our young students for the gay/lesbian rights. Preparing our youth for future secular rulers.

What do you think SAFMA came into existence. Musharraf got paid big $ to allow 1000's of NGO in the country funded by the UK/US. They didn't come here to play ping pong. Where was the human rights when two innocent bystanders were run over by Raymond Davis truck??

It SHOULD happen fast! Just like it happens with other people, they could be guilty, but they *could* be innocent too, but people kill them and set them on fire[1], that time no one comes forward to say "Hey wait a second...."

Just to clarify, I wasn't actually advocating a mob, I was just poining out a hypocrisy, that people are so ready to get out a mob at some times, while not at others, even though in both cases the accused is blamed for the same cause (blasphemy).

i never wrote anything that could be taken as supporting the Hafiz. But my claim remains fact that Christian countries have damaged, harmed us more than anybody else. Over 40,000 have been killed, many are killed daily, whether it is by drone or by target killers.

People like the Hafiz are in every society. Jim and Tammy Fay Baker in the US, Terrorist pastor Terry Jones (burnt Quran in Florida), the Sikh fellow who was prominent in desecrating the Babri Masjid (became Muslim later), and list goes on. Just because of one Hafiz, we must not lump all clerics in one basket. If you were do that, you should also label every American as terrorist, every Indian mosque destroyer, every Paki a target killer.

NGO's have been sent here by the West and accommodated by the Mush regime, with one and only one purpose and that is to destroyed the Islamic fabric of Pakistan. They have forced in Karachi school a sex education to youngsters. They are teaching gay and lesbian rights in Islamabad school. So you better get your facts straight before your refute my claims and appreciate NGO's work.

I consider NGO a Social Terrorist outfit and their personnel as Designated Terrorists and Social Invader. They should be prosecuted and ask for death penalty. Mush should also be prosecuted the same way.

Jo valid laws hote hain on koi proper justification hoti hai. iss law k liye koi root Quran aur Sunnet main nahi hai. Prophet (PBUH) ne aap per kuurra phainkne wali woman se dar-guzar kiya. Aap ne Taaif k hud se barhe logon k khliaf kuch nahi kiya. Aap ne Fatah Makkah pe sab ko muaf kiya.

Now this idiot law. Totally inconsistent with Quran-o-Sunnet... by wrongfully using the name of Quran-o-Sunnet. In fact only roots of this law is that other kafir countries also have such law. Like we should follow those kafir countries in the name of religion. Some other "roots" are also sometime pointed out. Some ghareeb hadiths and bla bla.
