PPP rules out army operation

ISLAMABAD/KARACHI - The Core Committee of PPP late Tuesday night put its weight behind the action plan devised by the Sindh government to purge the port city of Karachi from target killers and extortionists through effective and optimal utilization of Police and Rangers.

Held under the chair of PPP Co-Chairman President Asif Ali Zardari and attended by Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Makhdoom Amin Faheem, Syed Khurshid Shah, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Dr. Babar Awan, Dr. Asim, Jehangir Badr, Mahreen Anwar Raja, Nayyar Bokahri, Farhat Ullah Babar and others, the Core Committee was unanimous that Army should not be called out for Karachi peace. However, it endorsed the decision of Sindh government to grant extra powers to Rangers and Police to launch surgical strikes against target killers and all those involved in disruption of Karachi peace. During the meeting, the President also talked to Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah on telephone and had his input in the meeting.

The Sindh CM informed the President that the Sindh government had set up a control room to monitor the situation in various parts of the city, so that a prompt action could be taken in case of some happening in any part of the city.

Sources aware of the deliberations of the meeting informed that the President had also taken Awami National Party President Asfandyar Wali Khan on board and informed him the key decisions taken by the Sindh government for Karachi peace.

During his chat with Qaim, Zardari gave him assurance that the federal government would extend all possible help, in the maintenance of law and order situation in the restive port city. It is pertinent to mention here that both President and Prime Minister had directed Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik to stay in the port city for next few days and assist the Sindh government in its pursuits against miscreants.

The sources informed that it was also decided in the meeting that in next couple of days fresh contacts with MQM would be made to listen to their grievances and to remove their misunderstandings regarding the alleged patronage of terrorists by some PPP ministers.

The Core Committee also made it loud and clear that terrorists would be crushed even-handedly and no influence whatsoever would be taken from any quarter.

Earlier, in the evening the President had one-on-one meeting with Senior Sindh Minister Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza and admonished him for using harsh language with Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik and advised him that in the largest interest of the party and Karachi peace he should control his emotions and avoid giving provocative statements against anyone.

Meanwhile, the Sindh government on Tuesday hinted at involvement of banned religious outfits behind ongoing spree of killings and issued warning to banned Jehadi and sectarian organisations to immediately stop their activities and shut down their offices, otherwise, strict action would be taken against them under Anti-Terrorism Law.

Despite a clear decision of initiating surgical operation through police and Rangers against the terrorists, miscreants and extortionists, the provincial government has warned the extortionists to leave Karachi ,otherwise, stern action will be taken against them.

A high-level meeting, which was jointly chaired by the Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik at CM House, reviewed the law and order situation in the province particularly in context of continuing killings of people in Karachi.

The meeting, which also attended by Sindh Home Minister Manzoor Hussain Wassan, IG Police Sindh Wajid Ali Durrani, Acting DG Rangers Sindh Brig Zafar Iqbal, Additonal IG Police Karachi Saud Mirza and others, reviewed the efforts and steps taken by the law-enforcement agencies for maintaining the law and order, protection to lives and property of people, and initiating effective action against criminals and terrorists.

The meeting issued warning to 25 banned outfits, illegal Jehadi and sectarian organisations including Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Sipah-e-Sahaba to shut down their activities and offices in the provincial metropolis.

The meeting discussed roadmap to implement the decisions taken in the Sindh Cabinet meeting which met with Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani in the chair the other day on Monday, to end the killings and maintain sustainable peace in the City.

According to spokesman of the CM, the meeting was briefed by the IG police and DG Rangers about the measures taken by law-enforcement agencies to ensure the security of lives and property of the people in the City.

The meeting expressed its satisfaction over the decisions for arrangements and steps adopted under which heavy contingent of police and Rangers force was deployed in different areas of the City.

It was decided to further start stern action against extortionists, who were creating panic amongst traders, businessmen and industrialists and disturbing the peaceful atmosphere in Karachi.

All DPOs and other relevant police officers were directed to provide complete protection to traders, businessmen and industrialists.

The meeting also decided that the buses plying on inter-provincial routes will be snap checked, which are indulging in supplying illegal arms, ammunition, drugs and other prohibited articles.

The high-level meeting took another decision to reduce the number of routes and entry points of Karachi, so as to curtail the illegal activities of criminals, anti-State elements and to control the movement of arms and other illegal articles.

While reviewing the results so far achieved after initiating the action against culprits, it was stated that 5 extortionists were arrested from SITE area the other day.

The meeting also appreciated the efforts, measures, planning and strategy adopted by police and Rangers on the eve of Youm-e-Hazrat Ali(A.S).

It was informed that in all 4,000 personnel were deployed and due to prompt and effective measures, no untoward incident took place on Youm-e-Ali (A.S) in Sindh particularly in Karachi.

The IG Police Sindh and acting D.G Rangers Sindh were congratulated on such efforts and measures.
