New York: The book Fatal Faultlines: Pakistan, Islam and the West of Pakistans renowned columnist and author Irfan Husain has been granted Benjamin Franklin Award in the ceremony held in New York. The book was shortlisted in the genre of Political and Current Events along with its publisher Arc Manor, LLC. Besides two other books Palestine, A Novel and Walk Out Walk Onwere also shortlisted but they were runner ups.
Fatal Faultlines: Pakistan, Islam and the West touched upon issues have been prevailing after 9/11 scenario in which hatred of US continued to get place in the heart of Muslims of Pakistan and different countries, and the feelings and attitude of Americans are not so much different than the people east.
Husain traces different strands feeding this narrative of hate, of intolerance, of deep-seated prejudices on both sides of the divide.
His book wonders why neither government has made any effort to explain to Pakistanis and to the outside world why drone attacks are necessary and effective.(Aab bhe award na milta tou jab milta ..)
He also observes in the book, despite the thousands of websites seeking volunteers and funds for the jihad, only a handful of Muslims have paid much attention.
His reading of this denial is that Islamic terrorism poses a greater threat to Muslim countries than the west. He also observes that the US and its allies have made little effort in public at least to drain the extremist swamp of its Wahabi/Salafi/Takfiri content.
This is Husains first book. It does a fair job of cataloguing the reasons that place Muslims at the top of the most hated list of a west, in the crosshairs of a select few. At the same time, it challenges some basic assumptions.
