No legislation required for grant overseas Pakistanis right to vote: CJ
ISLAMABAD: A three member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry resumed hearing of the petition seeking voting rights for overseas Pakistanis.
During proceedings, Chief Justice Chaudhry remarked that no legislation was required to grant voting rights to overseas Pakistanis. Laws are for our country, why is there a need for legislation for arrangements in other countries.
The Chief Justice made these remarks when the apex court was informed by the counsel for the Election Commission of Pakistan that there was a need for legislation to grant voting rights to overseas Pakistanis.
The Chief Justice asked that a vote could be cast through a postal ballot, so why could the same process not be applied for overseas Pakistanis.
Justice Azmat Saeed remarked that a vote could be cast by writing the name of the district on the ballot paper and this postal ballot which could be distributed and collected by diplomatic missions abroad. The outlining of the procedure is not the sole responsibility of the Election Commission, political parties and the government would also have to play their role. If there is will a way can be found and legislation can also be formulated within ten minutes, Justice Saeed added.
The hearing of the case has been adjourned till February 27.
