LAHORE: Former army chief Mirza Aslam Beg said on Friday the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was established as a political measure to counter the Sindhi nationalist movement following the hanging of PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

Talking to a private TV channel, Beg said the MQM did not exist before 1978 and was established on the directions of General Ziaul Haq, then military ruler, only to counter Sindhi nationalists who had lost Bhutto after Zias military coup.

He said the caretaker government under Ghulam Ishaq Khan had decided to support the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) to counter the PPP in order to balance the political atmosphere. I think the formation of the IJI was a right decision at the time, he said.

Beg said the IJI were the only means that could create a strong opposition at the time.

He said former president Pervez Musharraf had created and supported the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) and the PML-Q to prolong his term in office, but no one had pointed that out.

Beg said he believed the Bahawalpur plane crash that killed Gen Ziaul Haq was sabotage.

Only question I ask from those who consider Jinnahpur as a reality... including Zadi Bhai... Why did the plot vanish after the operation... What we see from the history that the thoughts of independence once develop never go away...

My answer would just be a guess since I personally don't have any documents to prove that. My understanding for any idea to florish and prosper and progress and be popular among their people is to have some substantial grieviences of the people who standing against the state. By watching the Altaf's video for the last 10 years( including his singing and mocking different communities within Pakistan) I don't think any one takes him seriously. In order to keep himself alive in media, he always either issue a statement or allow himself to be ridiculed.I don't know if he was really serious of splitting Pakistan or not, one thing I know for sure that he is not a patriotic Pakistani by any mean. The reason MQM also unable to penetrate the mainstream pakistan because of the Altaf's past activities and mingling with India in India. There is also a big chunk of Pakistani population believe that Bhutta Khori is the Hallmark of the MQM. The voilence of 80' and wall painting of the different sligans in Karachi will always stay with the mind of Pakistani Population. MQM is not that angel face party.It is not needed to be proven now. I can't predict future, but I can tell you I don't trust this actor that this bafoon would be able to lead us anywhere with his arobatic activities. No doubt that he could sell the land to survive for another day.

secondly... I never said MQM is an angel party... but I amphasize.. For God sake... take it as a political party.. just like others.. achay buray log her jagha hotay hain...
