After reading Orya Maqbool review of "I am Malala".
OMJ's Analysis on Mala's Book(Must Read)
I thought their were a few things he left out.
Firstly Malala as a brand an a commodity was conceived by Western editors for a western audience.
This is a simple fact not an interpretation.
In a very interesting recent profile in Vanity fair we find out
Millions have been invested by the PR conglomorate Edelson (Which previous has forked for Saudi Ryal family, Shell petroleum, Wall mart, Microsoft) into brand Malala & till date the campaign has been wildly successful.

No lesser a figure Gordon Brown himself asked PR firm Mckinsey to handle the Malala file for the benefit of his UN endorsed corporate education vision which include dozen of corporate partners ranging from Western Union to Chevron. Intel to Tata sons and many other

With such powerful backers her Nobel prize nominations was not surprising , infact every bookie in the world had her as the favourite. She was after all an Awards Juggernaut.
What was deemed surprising by the disappointed International media & pundits in the end a 16 yr old whose education org till date has not opened a single school, given a single scholarship or trained a single teacher did not some how win Nobel peace award.
Truly a tragic oversight by the committee.
Christiana Lamb (who was commsioned to wirte Malalas Book) is very anti Pakistan. Read her book from the 90's "Waiting for Allah".
Literally hates Pakistan & Pakistanis with a vengeance.
After 2001 she was banned from the country to making tickets in name of "Osama Bin Laden" from quetta to Karachi.
Maybe for her next tabloid story.
Many foreign correspondents develop this pathological hatred towards Pakistan's.
An almost natural reaction to being exposed to the self hating scummy segment of English speaking intelligentsia.
Other notable examples of this trend are AFP's Myra Mcdonald & academic Christine Fair.
Kharboza akhir kharboza sai hi rang pakarta hai.
So naturally given the author,Malalas book from the few sections I managed to read is atrocious.
But she already has made $4 million from it and indeed Pakistan is not the audience in mind when writing it.
But its worth ponting out what is actually in the book given its not available widely in the country.
ON JINNAH little Malala writes:
My father says the problem is that Jinnah negotiated a piece of real estate
for us but not a state. He died of tuberculosis just a year after the creation of Pakistan and we haven’t
stopped fighting since.
Little Malala historical research also discovers that Jinnah a spendthrift also died of Lung cancer due to his excessive smoking No just TB as everyone assumes:
Afterwards we went into the small museum at the back, which had displays of the special white
bow ties Jinnah used to order from Paris, his three-piece suits tailored in London, his golf clubs and a
special travelling box with drawers for twelve pairs of shoes including his favourite two-tone
brogues. The walls were covered with photographs. In the ones from the early days of Pakistan you
could easily see from his thin sunken face that Jinnah was dying. His skin looked paper-thin. But at the
time it was kept a secret. Jinnah smoked fifty cigarettes a day. His body was riddled with TB and lung
cancer when Lord Mountbatten, the last British viceroy of India, agreed that India would be divided
at independence.
Regarding Gandhi her "hero" she write:
My father consoled me by telling me about the mistakes great heroes made when they were
children. He told me that Mahatma Gandhi said, ‘Freedom is not worth having if it does not include
the freedom to make mistakes.’
About our Ahl Tasheeh brothers in Muharram time Little Anthopologist Malala writes of them like some lost African tribe:
Every year Shias commemorate the killing of the Prophet’s grandson Hussein Ibn Ali at the battle
of Karbala in the year 680 with a festival called Muharram. They whip themselves into a bloody
frenzy with metal chains or razor blades on strings until the streets run red. One of my father’s friends
is a Shia and he cries whenever he talks about Hussein’s death at Karbala. He gets so emotional you
would think the events had happened just the night before, not more than 1,300 years ago.
American readers would be delighted to know Little Malala hearts Obama
I had done many TV interviews and in one of them I had been asked to name my favourite politicians. I
had chosen Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, Benazir Bhutto and President Barack Obama. I had read about
Obama and admired him because as a young black man from a struggling family he had achieved his
ambitions and dreams.
Ofcourse Amrican audiences would be delighted to known Little Malala also inspired by Abraham Lincoln
Outside his office my father had a framed copy of a letter written by Abraham
Lincoln to his son’s teacher, translated into Pashto.:13:It is a very beautiful letter, full of good advice.
‘Teach him, if you can, the wonder of books . . . But also give him quiet time to ponder the eternal
mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and the flowers on a green hillside,’ it says. ‘Teach him it
is far more honourable to fail than to cheat.’
Infact Little Malala you would e astonished to know quoted Lincoln extensively in her 1st speech
I remembered what my father had said about taking a deep breath before starting, but then I
saw that all eyes were on me and I rushed through. I kept losing my place as the pages danced in my
shaking hands, but as I ended with Lincoln’s words, I looked up at my father. He was smiling.
When the judges announced the results at the end, Moniba had won. I came second.
It didn’t matter. Lincoln also wrote in the letter to his son’s teacher, ‘Teach him how to gracefully
lose.’
Poor innocent Little Malala cant understand why Ahmedis who call themselves Muslims are not considered so by the govt:
Now we are a country of 180 million and more than 96 per cent
are Muslim. We also have around two million Christians and more than two million Ahmadis, who
say they are Muslims though our government says they are not.
This is the entire book. Line after line of gruel with every line loaded with a thinly disguised agenda.
Whether political, societal etc. No spontaneity. No attempt to engage.
A book produced by committee. Each line vested by various interested parties.
St. Malala PR firm (Edelson) selling Brand Malala TM.
Look I may not have a problem with Malala's specific views. But its the dishonesty & pandering that its excruciating.
Why is this vapid nonsense being forced down our throats
Here is an actual illustration from the book
So 10 yr old little terrified Malala a Pashtoon girl from Swat in an IDP camp was dreaming of interfaith harmony.
Down to the Minoras & Om symbols I am sure most of Pakistan have no trouble at all identifying.
Update:
A few thoughts I had on what is haunting Brand Malala, and the way forward.Click Here
