MINGORA: The anti-corruption department has lodged an FIR against the chief municipal officer (CMO) of Mingora for misusing his powers and allegedly taking bribes.
Following instructions by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) chief secretary, the district circle officer of the anti-corruption department, Abdul Haleem, sent an application to his provincial director for the arrest of Mingora Tehsil Municipal Committee (TMC) CMO Nisar Khan. The application was sent after the FIR was lodged on August 13.
The district anti-corruption office in Saidu Sharif alleged the CMO asked for Rs3,000,000 as bribe to allow a poultry waste dealer to operate.
Denying the allegations against the CMO, Mingora TMC Municipal Officer Mian Faisal Khan told The Express Tribune that an NOC to remove poultry waste from Mingora was issued on a trial basis to a contractor at Rs5,000 a month.
“Later on, a man named Abdullah wanted to take over the poultry waste disposal illegally. The CMO took action and stopped him from doing so,” Faisal said.
It is believed the CMO is still working at the post, but some sources suggest he had been made an officer on special duty and replaced by Fazal Rabbi, the CMO of Barikot tehsil.
Some locals claimed the efficiency of TMC Mingora had diminished a great deal during the present CMO’s era.
“Mingora bazaar, the financial hub of Swat Valley, has become filthy. The sewage and drainage systems are a mess,” said Niaz Khan, a resident of Mingora. Other locals said illegal encroachments by street vendors on the narrow lanes of the bazaar have made people’s lives miserable. They accused the TMC and the traffic police of completely ignoring the issue.
