PESHAWAR The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Health Department is working to reduce the infant mortality rate and related maternal deaths by strengthening emergency services, officials said.
The reforms are a "top priority," Dr. Muhammad Zafar, director-general of KP health services, told Central Asia Online. "Full maternity services, intensive care units equipped with monitors, life-saving medicines, nebulisers and all diagnostic services will be provided at all the hospitals in the province."
Necessary equipment for 15 district headquarters (DHQ) hospitals and nine teaching hospitals will cost Rs. 1 billion (US $9.8m), he said, adding that an international donor has pledged to finance the programme at eight DHQ hospitals by spending Rs. 20m (US $196,000) on each. The government would provide financial resources to the remaining seven DHQ hospitals.
