July 2015: Expanding trade gap a wake-up call for govt

KARACHI: The widening trade deficit should be a wake-up call for the government as it indicates the difficultly exporters face in maintaining the share for their goods in slowing European and US markets, industry people toldThe Express Tribune.

The trade deficit, which is the difference between the value of goods a country exports and imports, rose 34.62% in July 2015 over the same month of previous year.

The data comes following a record $22 billion trade gap recorded last fiscal year and despite a decline in oil prices, which had traditionally been the biggest drain on the country’s foreign currency reserves.

“I fail to understand what the government is waiting for. This is high time for the industry and the government to sit and find a way out of this situation,” said Pakistan Bedwear Exporters Association Chairman Shabbir Ahmed.
Members of the association had experienced an across-the-board decline in revenues, he said.

“This is happening despite the fact that we enjoy preferential access to the EU market under GSP Plus and interest rate is also lower at home. The only explanation is that this is a systematic slowdown in demand.”

Despite a rise in quantity, bed-wear exports dropped 2% to $2.09 billion in 2014-15 over the previous year.

Textile industry people have been complaining for months that they have not had any meaningful interaction with either Federal Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan or Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.

“I have never seen a commerce minister who will persistently ignore the private sector like Khurram Dastgir has been doing,” said Shabbir Ahmed, complaining that the minister did not even respond to phone calls.

“It has been over a year since we first raised the red flag. But no one has taken us seriously.”

Dastgir, who is on a trip to Belarus with the prime minister, held meetings with heads of various chambers but completely ignored a vital association, Ahmed said.

Aptma warns of further export decline

LAHORE: The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association expressed grave concern on Tuesday at the 17-percent decline in overall exports in July, warning that if the trend continued it may translate into a yearly decline of $4 billion.

Aptma has been warning the government of the eventuality, its chairman S M Tanveer, according to a press release from the association.

He said the industry is burdened with additional taxes of Rs172 billion this year that has eroded its competitiveness. He said rupee is overvalued.

The government has the option of either devaluing the rupee by 12-15 percent or remove irrational taxes on exporting industries to make them zero-rated.

He said that based on decline in exports it is likely that damage to textile exports was much higher because textile accounts for around 57 percent of our total exports.

[h=1]Pakistan’s exports at a record 4-year low[/h]
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s exports have plunged to a four-year low of $23.9 billion in the recently ended financial year – missing the target by $3.1 billion and tattering the much-trumpeted ‘Vision 2025’ that promises six times increase in exports in the next 10 years.
The country exported goods worth $23.9 billion during the last financial year 2014-15, which were $1.3 billion or 4.9% less than the previous fiscal year, reported the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Thursday.
It was a poorer performance compared to Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) last year in office, which is generally considered as a bad year in terms of economic policies and governance. In the last year of the PPP government, the exports had increased to $24.5 billon.
It was also the lowest number since 2011-12 when the country had exported goods worth $23.6 billion.
The country’s exports are falling at a time when its regional peers are increasing their shares in global trade. Pakistan’s exports amount to only 0.15% of the global receipts from exports.
While the exports dropped by almost 5%, the imports in the same period grew on an average of 2.1% to $46 billion, widening the trade deficit by 10.7%.

Let the jokers complete their tenure (in 2.5 years time) and as per Hasan Nisar the Ba Ba of people (both Rich and poors) be heard on Mars. I am impatiantly waiting for those holy sounds....

These idiots keep on taking loans on hard conditions and keep on increasing Power terrifs and imposing new Taxes every month, how can on earth the industry grow and compete in international market? Due to heavy inflation, the labour cost is increased as well. These all make very difficult for industries to survive even.
