Pakistan’s Jinnah offered Sikhs an autonomous Khalistan but entire Sikh leadership was taken into confidence by the Indians with false promises and assurances that has till date, not seen the light of the day
While 1984 has become synonymous with Operation Blue Star, there were numerous events the same year that saw a massive amount of harassment and pain inflicted on the Sikh community. Sometimes it helps to go back and revisit these events to understand and remind ourselves of the grave agony and injustice caused to the Sikh community and how it continues till date.
Indira Gandhi’s warning to Sikhs
Sikhs in Punjab were issued a warning by the Indira Gandhi Government that they would be treated as a minority with no rights if they didn’t accept to the terms of the Government. The intention was to ensure Sikhs don’t speak out freely about the harassment caused to them but instead, accept everything that was said by the Hindu majority. Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale’s (“Sant”) famous line still is strong on our minds – “One Sikh can take on 20 Hindus”. In the fury of this statement, he was threatened with legal action while nothing was done with Indira Gandhi’s threats. In the period following this, innumerous Sikhs were killed, dozens of Gurdwaras were burned and hundreds of establishments owned by Sikhs were looted and plundered by Hindus under the orders of Bhajan Lal, Chief Minister of Haryana. No action against the Hindus was taken.
Assassination Attempt on Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale
Harchand Singh Longowal (“Longowal”) was the President of the Akali Dal during the Punjab insurgency of the 1980s. Having signed the Punjab accord, also known as the Rajiv-Longowal Accord to withdraw their agitation in return for their demans being accepted made his famous, but also put him in bad light with the ones that were fighting for a free Punjab, one where Sikhs were not subjected to discrimination.
