Israel chickening out?

By ducking nuclear security meeting, Netanyahu exposes Israels character

Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahus withdrawal from the upcoming two-day nuclear security meeting in the US could represent a highly significant moment in the Middle East affairs. The Israelis are giving out that Netanyahu had been warned he would be challenged by the Turkish and Egyptian delegations over Israels own undeclared nuclear arsenal.

There has also been speculation that with relations with Washington already strained, the Israeli leader was not prepared to risk another confrontation with the Obama administration. Yet until yesterday he had been vowing he would attend to raise the question of Irans nuclear ambitions and to press harder for international action against Tehran.

The reason this last minute change of mind could be so important is that even the Israelis have recognized the fundamental contradiction in their position. There they are, an undeclared nuclear power that has therefore refused to sign up to the 1970s Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT), insisting that another Mideast country should not be allowed to also own such fearsome weaponry. It is patently clear that if it is right that Iran is driving to arm itself with nuclear warheads, then this in large degree because Israel has been the only regional nuclear power and has been prepared to use its warplanes to stop Iraq and most recently Syria from emulating it.

It cannot demand Iran be exposed to sanctions and untrammeled inspections by the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) without being prepared to accept the same scrutiny itself and if it continues to block such checks, also to admit that sanctions against it must also be appropriate.

As the expression has it, Israel can no longer run with the hare and hunt with the hounds. If it wants Iran to open up its nuclear facilities to the IAEA, it can only offer the same for its own nuclear plant at Dimona in the Negev desert.

Therefore Obamas nuclear security conference that will be attended by the leaders of some 47 countries has in its way already ambushed the Israelis. Coming on top of the nuclear arms reduction deal inked with the Russians in Prague Thursday and the publication of the US Nuclear Posture Review, setting out when Washington would use its atomic arsenal, the conference will look to restore order and control to the worlds nuclear powers.

By canceling his attendance, Netanyahu has highlighted Israels own failure to comply with its international obligations. It has also made the issue of its nuclear arsenal an international issue that is unlikely to go away. Were India and Pakistan to finally sign up to the NPT, Israels position could become very awkward indeed.

Israelis need to understand that what they thought once was a comfortable guarantee of their existence has become a potent part of the Mideast problem. If Iran is indeed driving secretly toward nuclear weapons, it is because an aggressive and threatening Israel already has them. The way to stop this escalation is for Israel to come clean, sign the NPT and join in the project to rid the world of the nuclear menace.

When have Israel (or the USA for that matter) ever bothered with international law? If it is not in "their interest" then they will not adhere to it. It does not matter, to those countries, what is in the best interest of the world.

Important bit of news that wasn't in this article.

Obama made it US policy to not use nukes against any nation that signs and adheres the nuclear nonproliferation treaty .. even if these nations attack America with biological, chemical or any other weapons.

Brave move by Obama to stem nuclear proliferation.

If I remember correctly Israel were one of the major players in trying to prevent Pakistan from developing atomic (and eventually nuclear) capabilities so no suprise they don't want any muslim country to have it.

I wonder if they got the hint that the European nations would have gone against them based upon the critiscm and cold shoulders they received over the Dubai assasination/UK passport hijackings etc.

It is still beyond me that any country, that has nuclear weapons, can make demands on another country to not have nuclear arms.

It is true what RA says when he states that nobody knows what Iran's intentions are with "nuclear weapons." But that also works both ways they may want it for weapons or they may want it for cheap power.

History has proven that only 1 country has ever used nuclear power as a weapon.

The Zionist State is notorious for not adhering to or complying with international law - and that law is in itself ineffective since it is very selectively applied.

I really dont think that Israel cares about what people say about her nuclear arsenal... and when there time will come... they might use it as we... Israelis dont give a damn about international law... in fact international law has been designed to protect their own interest....

It is time that Muslims should learn to resolve their conflicts and OIC should be made powerful and strong platform with its army to counter balance NATO and EU

In Defense of Israel:
1. This is only a tactical withdrawl. It makes no sense to be on the receiving end of biased and chauvinistic leaders.

2. Every rule/law has an exception. And Israel is the only fit case that should be exempted from the NPT regime.

3. My friends, the Israeli armed forces are called the IDF - Israel DEFENSE Forces. The word Defense is of significance. Israel has never been the aggressor. It is a tiny country surrounded by hostile neighbours who are just waiting for a chance to attack it.
Israel wants to build and survive, whereas, its enemies want to destroy and Kill.

4. lahori bhai, ZH and people like him are spreading this lie, don't believe them.
Also, the Dubai assassination was an "inside job", Israel is in no way responsible for the murder.
To show a video of men and women standing in a lobby, and to claim that they are the "Hit team" is naive. Do you honestly believe that so many agents can enter a country without anyone knowing?

How would you explain the ever diminishing Palestinian territories....

The rest of your points are also sort of jokes...

But kindly explain to me...

If this you call defence...this is the weirdest sort of defence I have ever seen...

This absence of Israel is really maybe the part of the US plan. US didn't want to antagonize the Muslim attendees of the summit. In presence of Israel, Obama would have tough time selling his plan. I am sure Obama thanked Israel for not attending. US/Israel relationship will never be strained thanks to Jewish media.

@jazoo...

I think its the other way round... its probably Israel which controls the US.....

SO the dialogue may have been...

"I have decided not to attend... so you try and sell the plan to others.....Its better we are not there... so it would be easy to convince others and in any case.. we are above the international law .. so why should we attend!!! "
